He got home after they entered, it seems like then was when he found out about the search warrant and was given a copy. The kids had to see the police make a forced entry, and they had to be relocated out of the house by CPS.

Cops knock and a child refuses them entry as well
They break in and find Kayla, April, kids (minus one) and a ton of drugs and a modest amount of guns.
Arrest April and Nick, probably don't book Kayla for a bit so she can arrange for family to pick the kids up.
