Young kids and self defense can be a tough problem to solve. Many people opt for some type of quick opening safe. Most of these are for pistols. You can lock up the firearm during the day, but even if you're a light sleeper it doesn't mean you'll wake up every time your kid comes in after a bad dream. You need to have early education and familiarization with you kids about guns if you keep them in the house and many people don't. Ideally you want something like a dog to alert you to an intruder before they're kicking your bedroom door in so you can get to your properly secured firearm that is within reach while you're sleeping. Keep some active electronic ear pro next to it too. Shooting inside is fucking loud. This a legit question to my burger friends: why is storing your Sig Sauer under the bed a bad thing? I seem to recall many times many people bitching about the stupidity of gun safes, because in a home defense situation you want your firearm as soon as possible. Of course, there's the "the kids might blow your/their brains out" thing, and the loose ammunition, but then what is the proper way to store it in a way that wouldn't be an aggravating factor yet still be optimal for home defense?
Surely you'd have enough time to buckle up as you saw an accident coming and weren't wearing your seatbelt, wouldn't you? You shouldn't keep your gun intended for self defense out of reach under the bed for the same reason you shouldn't keep your seatbelt unbuckled.
