As far as I'm concerned, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Department did not traumatize Nick's kids. If the kids were traumatized by what they did, NICK FORCED THAT SITUATION!

Aside from the fact Nick shouldn't have all that shit in the house in the first place, a reasonable person, ESPECIALLY a lawyer, would realize that with a warrant, they are gaining access one way or another (a point Sean seemingly agrees with), and that just punching in the door code would avoid a lot of unpleasantness for the kids

There's a lot wrong with him, but he's getting the best treatment money can buy as far as I know. He has good days and bad days. It's too early to tell anything. Since all we have to go on is a charge that doesn't split the difference between physical or sexual abuse. And also the charge doesn't say Nicky or Kayla abused the kids only that Kayla was complicit.

Yes, that's what I was saying initially: where's the hook? The most logical thing, based on available info, is that they should both have been charged under b2. If not, and Kayla is meant to be charged under a, which relates to Nick's b2, then I'm back to all the other stuff I said about some kind of funky construction of b2 as "abuse," even though it's a neglect charge and neglect and abuse are distinct concepts in MN.

This kind of thinking is dangerous because it leads people to never really forgive addicts, and if they do say fuck it and relapse because of that they can physically harm their brains beyond recoverability. I agree that consequences should exist, but treating the average dopehead like a pariah has never led to any positive result.

Not the average dopehead as a general thing, no, agree completely. Again, I was focusing on the category I see as Nick's slot. And people harmed by it should never be charged with having to forgive. If you want to, great (and one's own resentment vs forgiveness vs some other flavor, is of course a matter for oneself to sort out), but morally and civically speaking, they're owed nothing by those they've harmed. And those types should be on their knees trying to make it up.

Shit people who live their entire lives playing reckless with or deliberately dangerous to other people's lives, in service of their own egos and jollies, who claim they are rehabilitated and deserving of polite society because they did 1-2-3 should be given knee pads, and that's it. If they're truly sorry, they'll truly repent, and if they're truly "working the program," they'll take making amends seriously. No, that's not always possible - people die, disappear, don't want to be contacted or receive anything from someone who devastated their life, etc. But 9/10 it's possible, and 9.9999999/10 it's not done.

Again, that's not all addicts, just the ones for whom "recovery" is just another way to get over or a box to check to get back to where they can resume exploitation and devastation.

In short, some people have a real reason to have become addicted. That isn't Nick. Nick just chooses this life every single day he wakes up, and THAT is what makes him contemptible.

I find the addiction itself far less contemptible than all the other defective characteristics of Nick's personality. He LOVES who he is; people who are like him - the people who play Russian roulette with other people's lives and laugh about it, the ones who believe the world should organize itself around them, always do. Oh, sure, dig hard enough and you might find some self-loathing (and for "normal" addicts that is often a root cause of getting caught up or fucking up, one often worth sorting out), but the difference is that the Nicks don't actually care - hell, they won't even admit it unless it's in service of some personal goal or gain. They're liars and users, and they think that is their rightful prerogative. Would any of them change places with the people they disturbed? I don't think so.

Again, my character-slamming was of a very specific type of person, and having written so much about it, I'm annoyed if I didn't make that clear. I appreciate your comments.
