A lawyer generally can't just drop a client without cause. Cause is something like not getting paid, a client not communicating with them for an extended period, a client trying to get them to commit a crime. I'm sad because my friend drank himself to death and I just figured out my alcoholic junkie client is an alcoholic probably isn't cause, but IANAL.
