There is a weird way in which you can have something causal that isn't to blame. Yes and yes. This is very common "trust baby" situations, the kid has learned to complain about things that sound reasonablish, and since the money is there, it flows. I know families with stay-at-home moms who handle way more kids than this shitstorm, and homeschool, and drive around, and do well. It's common in rural areas, too.

It's a form of "the devil made me do it" and it's a huge HUGE wall between the shitstorm and actually getting help and healing. Paying for law school, a house, and support during law school is something ANY parent would do for their kid if they could. That's trying to give your kid a better/easier life than you had, and I would do it in a heartbeat too. As for paying for the bills after the streaming collapsed, they do bear that responsibility. But what's the alternative? Having their grandkids go homeless? It's a catch-22 situation. Either you support the parents in an attempt to save the grand kids, or you allow the grand kids to suffer for their parents' actions. It's not an easy decision. You're essentially trying to keep the hostages alive at that point.
It kind of is because the drastic solutions need to be enacted early (and apparently, they have been in the past, reading between the lines) BUT they also can just bandage over things. Nick getting independently wealthy from streaming fucked him hard, before that the leash was at least something that could be jerked back (and from his rants, clearly often was).
The fact that Nick's parents haven't sprung for the $50k bond is actually a really good one; the best outcome now may hinge on the state keeping a watchful eye on both's drug and alcohol intake. Let's hope on the ground they can assert some power.
