I'm a fedora tipping atheist who's never been to church, and even I immediately understood why the townsfolk would find it strange for Nick to be frequently stepping out mid-service. I doubt there's much difference between catholics and protestants on this. The only real differences between Christian denominations in their church services are what little rituals are held and what parts of the bible they emphasize.
