I think this is a function of the need to change your mindset from being a degenerate who's obsessed with drugs and alcohol, to somebody who no longer uses drugs and alcohol yet remains obsessed by them.

It's also a grift. People who stop using will often need a new grift. I used to think it was hilarious/irritating in equal measure. These days, I'm more sympathetic.
