The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

The life of the royal is one of privilege given to them by the state and its taxpayers, the least any of them can do is do some photo ops here and there in a military uniform.

I don’t know. The British apparatus is fairly inefficient so I suspect its patchily enforced
I know people who had a kid while abroad and resident in another country. Both parents are native brits, kid is a citizen of the country they were born in as well. Unless you actually tell the British state they don’t seem to know you have a kid who is a citizen at all, and even if you do tell them they aren’t up for giving you a passport without a million hoops to jump through.
For dual nationals in most places it doesn’t prevent you from being called up, there’s usually a line on any embassy website to the effect of ‘if your native country calls you back for national service that’s your problem.’

There are many rumors stating her two kids are not visible due to their down syndrome.

We never see their face and Meghan is the type to use her kids as accessories on Insta for sponsorship. In that particular case, she planned to use the kids to get money and royal titles.
So it's really weird we don't see more of them.

But since the royal cut her off, maybe she realized the kids were no use to her anymore? Or she's to ashamed to show them?

I'm sure Meghan lied about her real age and she's 5 to 8 years older than she said. Which would make sense: having the kids with a retard and after 45 is highly increasing risks in development.

but babies with Downs Syndrome tend to have a very specific look and I'm just not seeing it. Harry looked similar, if anything I'd say they've got Diana's eyes

Harry probably (for once) put his foot down and insisted Meghan didn't post them too much on social media because he remembers what it was like being a vulnerable little boy in the press all the time, it's basically one of the only things I'd respect him for.

You know, I'm growing to miss that time. It's certainly a lot better to pay $50 to a Sears photog than have to spend $500 on some idiot freelance photographer's 20-minute session photographing the kids in a park and then giving you the digital files. The kiddos look normal and I don't see any markers of down syndrome that are common even that young. Either Harry (or someone sane near them) put their foot down when it came to using the children as props OR the rumors of Meghan never actually being pregnant might hold some weight to them after all.

It's not surprising since Harry is legit retarded and Meghan did a lot of plastic surgery.
However, I'm convinced there's something very wrong with them and that's the reason Meghan is not strutting with them all the time.

If you google for more pictures, there's literally 5 or 6 different pictures of both them and you don't even get a clear look at their face. That's way to strange for two narcissists who constantly want to be the center of attention.

I don’t know what kind of mother would make that exact calculation. I am aware that I am not remotely able to judge my offspring’s looks objectively. He’s just the most beautiful human in the world and I love him with my whole heart. My phone is always out of space because I take so many photos.

Is he probably just a normal kid with the right number of heads and limbs? I mean, sure but as his mom I shouldn’t be relied upon to make an impartial call on that.

The kids' eyes worry me a tiny bit. Are they being handed phones to play with or are they being encouraged to interact with their environment?
Sticking a phone in front of an infant is a great way to keep them from properly developing their eye muscles, resulting in that cross eyed thing both of M&H's kids seem to have going on.
