Yeah maybe the problem is Balldo is still heavily drinking, as in he's a degenerate alcoholic who's made no effort to stop. I feel a bit gay for commenting on the "should 16 year olds take care of themselves" thing that has been done to death a gazillion times, but I wanted to add another observation about that cope--even when kids are able to take care of their own basic needs, their default preference is going to be to avoid chores whenever possible. If parents aren't actively teaching kids to take care of younger siblings and disciplining them to do so, it's very likely that they will view the state of the other siblings as "not my business, not my problem," and just stay in their little corner of the house doing the bare minimum for themselves while the house overall descends into squalor. This goes double when the parents are setting that as the example by hiding in their bedroom all day and doing nothing for the household.
