I'm not a trained lifeguard, but one thing lifeguards do is wait until you've run out of strength and can't keep your head above water before helping. They know a panicking, drowning person will inadvertently drag their rescuers under. You need to wait until they can't fight back before helping.

There are also many practical examples of this phenomenon. In April of 2023, there were three separate incidents where an adult shot at an adolescent for being on their property.

The first victim was Kinsley White, who is white. She was playing with a ball and it rolled into the yard of her neighbor, Robert Singletary, who is black. Singletary shot her. She was six years old, by the way.

The second victim was Conor Mullins, also white. He was shot and killed by Tywoana Anderson-Jakes because he was playing in an empty lot across the street from her house. He was 12 years old.

The third victim was Ralph Yarl, who is black, and 16 years old. He was on his way to pick up his brother, but he got the wrong house. Honest mistake. But, because he thought his brother was in the house, he tried to enter. When the door was locked, he pounded on it. That behavior would be fine if he was at the right house. But he was at the wrong house, and it was after dark ...so the homeowner was justifiably terrified. The homeowner, Andrew Lester, is white, and also 84 years old. Lester fired a gun through the door. Really, really dumb thing to do - and yes he's being prosecuted for it.

You've never heard of the first two victims. News stories about them rarely mention the racial component. The shooting of Ralph Yarl was national news ...and still is - I literally found news stories published a week ago! All of the stories mention that Yarl is black, and the guy who shot him is white. Yarl was invited to the white house and given a full scholarship.

Here's a juxtaposition of the reporting of these three stories. The top row are stories about Kinsley White. The bottom row are stories about Yarl. The media doesn't report the race when a black person shoots a white person, but they put it in the headline when a white person shoots a black person.

In December, Singletary was separately charged with assaulting his girlfriend with a mini sledgehammer, leading her to bleed profusely from the back of the head and forcing her inside an apartment for two hours.

The second victim was Conor Mullins, also white. He was shot and killed by Tywoana Anderson-Jakes because he was playing in an empty lot across the street from her house. He was 12 years old.

The mother of the victim, 13-year-old Connor Mullins, broke down in sobs discussing her release.

“We are devastated. Where is the fairness for our son, Connor? He was the sweetest boy. For her to be able to walk free is frightening and other children are in danger because she’s out to possibly kill again. I don’t want other families to feel the pain we live with. I’m extremely disappointed with the judge. We are heartbroken,” said Connor’s mother Christina Holloway.

Jakes’ family has stated in a prior court appearance “she is not the same after losing her son in 2011”, to a gunshot wound.

So you inflict the exact same pain on other families. Fuck you. Literally go to hell.

In practical interviews, we would pick the heaviest, strongest male on staff and simulate a rescue where he would do his absolute damnedest to drown whoever was assigned to rescue him. It would always be a variation on: 6’5” water polo player. If anyone couldn’t subdue him and initiate a rescue using a rescue tube (floaty lifeguard thing), they weren’t hired. We would hire from lifelong competitive swimmers and water polo players and about half the group always failed. Call 911, find something floaty to throw at the drowning adult, and do not get in the water. It will end in tragedy.

Yeah, it looked like he was using all his upper body strength to keep himself so damn high out of the water he was legit a foot above the log doggie paddling and then lost his grip on it. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was a pure panic move (which it also was) but how do you not identify a floating device/object while actively holding onto it and actively not drowning?

The second thing I have learned from this thread is if you can’t swim and are a basketball american, apparently water is your best friend and most cherished environment to be in for some reason. I also want context but it would not surprise me if the context turned out to be just as stupid as the guy that drowned trying to get his car paid way earlier in this thread, knowing he could not swim and his friends knew too.

yeah i might be saying this from a point of not-being-a-nigger privilege, but swimming is such an inherent thing, nearly every mammal does it, babies are born with the innate instinct to do it, and even those who don't how how to "swim" can still float, the body is buoyant
i'm almost starting to wonder if there's some physiological difference between negroes and most other races where they can't hold themselves above water, or maybe it's a psychological thing- after all most people who drown in still water or very light currents do it while panicking, maybe they attempt to react to the water the same way they would to another biggy niggy attack

Yes, blacks face several physical disadvantages when it comes to swimming.

Blacks have significantly higher bone density than whites (black > white > yellow, the old 1, 2, 3). Those heavy limbs are great for clubbing people with but not so good for doing front crawl.

Blacks are also more likley to have a mesomorphic body type. Ideally for swimming, you want to have a bit of blubber and you want it to be evenly distributed. This one of the reasons why the gap between men and women in swimming is smaller than it is in other sports. Although men have the strength advantage, women's higher body fat ratio gives them a considerable bouyancy advantage.

As for the psychological aspect of drowning, the African's proneness to excitement probably doesn't help.
