Gamefaqs - An old gaming website that still exists somehow

A very GameFAQs response. The level of autism required to get haughty about what a child did with a video game in 2002 is pretty incredible.
I wasn't getting haughty, I was remarking that emulators weren't great back then.

On that note, were forums like GameFAQs anti-piracy for legal reasons or because of actual "NINTENDO SAYS THAT IT'S STEALING" faggotry?

Well then! Didn't consider that Zalphas only use Tiktok now, though I'm not sure if that's better or not.

The groomers left yahoo games when it was shut down due to their faggotry and moved on to Roblox where they can be extremely anonymous
I think one of the effects in Earthbound was elevated encounter rates, I'm pretty sure I ran into that. It was actually kinda interesting.

I've certainly used emulation more for most systems, not even just SNES. The main exceptions at this point are all 7th gen and up, because it's more of a hassle to get going.
Eh, Metroid Fusion is a GBA game but SNES not working on PCs is a thing. Just a few years ago I was talking about how Mode 7 fucks up my computer since it was unique to SNES only and hard to emulate using PC hardware. GBA was no problem

Earthbound and the unreleased USA version of Mother had so many piracy checks that gamers had to take them out one at a time until they hit another one. Crazy amounts of enemies was a tell, besides that the game normally had a lot of encounters already. This would make places spawn crows everywhere and meant to just make everything unplayable. There are Long lists of EB/M info on Earthbound Central that appears to be deleted but available on archive.

The best final check in Earthbound is all the way at the end battle which is terrifying enough already. It locks up and deletes your save. You wouldn't download a car

I suspect I've played more SNES games using ZSNES than real hardware or any other emulator and that statement would send the average GameFAGs user or Redditor into a full blown conniption fit.

When you're a kid, you're not concerned with "emulation accuracy" or things like that. You're just psyched to be playing console games for free on your computer.
The number of fan translated games were great; and I don't care what anyone thinks, the Sailor Moon RPG on the SNES / Super Famicom is a good fucking game. I remember like 3 to 6 months after Smash Melee came out, we started seeing a lot of the older Fire Emblems pop up, translated. I also figure part of the elitism about no-emulators was from the no life JET/ALT types. Because I know they loved being the first to get a RPG walkthrough or whatever through, and would try lording over others.

That was due to poor emulation. An infamous case was Demon's Crest first stage end boss being invincible by triggering antipiracy measures.
I don't know. I never had a problem emulating SNES games by 2001/2002. I remember at the time people saying that it couldn't emulate transparent water effects but I never had a problem in my Mega Man X games.

The only GBA game that I ever hit an anti piracy measure with was some Sonic game, and I remember Gamefaqs getting all pissed about it when I mentioned it on their forum back then too lol.

Edit: Now I'm wondering if I have some sort of love from God since apparently I had a shitty e-machine that could emulate any SNES and GBA game I threw at it in the same way I now seemingly have a mid-range PC that runs Cyberpunk and Starfield on high without any major issues while everyone I know with 1000+ computers allegedly can't run them worth a shit.

Interesting poll of the day:

Over half of the site are lifers. Jeez. And only 6.43% have started visiting since 2019? Nice investment, Fandom.

Early days of GameFAQs, I remember emulation being a whole don't-ask-don't-tell kind of thing, though you could mention and recommend emulators themselves, because they're legal. Though of course, mods would try to get whomever they could in trouble for any reason if they found out they're a dirty rotten pirate of games you couldn't even buy for over a decade by that point.

That tracks with the loser groomers back in 2000s still being there until now. I wonder what they're doing since the supply of young gamers having dried up. My money's on Roblox

A lot of those FAQs for Japanese RPGs in the early 2000s were completely hilarious too.

What the fuck, man. Can I just get a map homeboy?

Honestly, it's amazing I ever got into emulation at all considering how strict GameFAQs was. I might have visted other sites/forums back then but if I did I surely can't remember them.
Some of my earliest memories were of my dad bringing home DOS games that were shared among his work friends along with photocopied manuals to get around early copy protection, so I was using less-than-legal software before I even knew how to read.

It was either those shit directions or people trying to landmark things, but since no one really sees the same thing, their landmark system sucked. "Keep going and then turn left at the rock that looks like a face." You're now on the other side of the map, because you don't know what fucking rock looks like a face.

Hm, I'm no computer guy so idk, but I never had problems with SNES aside from the copy protections. Well, SFX chip ones ran a little shitty, but totally playable in the case of SMRPG because it's turn-based.

Damn, that last one is just a straight up "fuck you" lmao

I hear the fighting game is good too. I'm not a fan of the series but I like the art style, they seem fun.

Oh I wasn't clear, my PCs some years ago would work fine until Mode 7 and it just staggers until you're out of that part.

20+ years ago it was hard to run SNES on any given PC. However recently some turbo autists recommended bsnes (lol) and that shit lags really hard for some games. Turns out it was built to emulate the original hardware bit for bit

Leading to the spedrunners they don't use ZSNES, which is the best one nevermind its age; they will only use the most accurate emulators for authenticity. So why not hook up your console and screen record it? Well, speds don't actually play the game as fast as possible; they slow the games down and go thru it pixel by pixel to fight to be the person with the highest score within .20 seconds or whatever.

If you see the video description of a speedrun with the letters TAS, sometimes spelled out as tool assisted speedrun, which virtually all of them are, that's what you're looking at.

ZSNES was an impressive achievement for the time, but it really hasn't aged well. Large parts of it were written in assembly, because back then it was critical for performance. But it's made it very not portable and hard to maintain. Also, a lot of translations and other ROM patches from that era wouldn't work on other emulators because they were written around ZSNES game-specific hacks.

SNES9x used more conventional development methods. It didn't run as well on average (for the time) hardware, but it didn't use nearly as many dirty hacks and was much more portable and maintainable. Compared to the other two it ended up being a sort of middle ground, and I think it's the best compromise between accuracy and performance.

bsnes, originally written by Kiwifarms Suicide Beam™ victim byuu, was created cycle accurate not for the benefit of speed runners, but for archivists. The idea was that not having any game specific hacks would mean there's a true historical archive of the SNES, playable just like the original, even once all the original hardware is dead. It was later picked up on by speed runners because they're hyperautists who measure their runs in individual frames.

Right it was meant for purity but is the most accurate emulator so the sped runners have latched on to it.

For the portability I mean I run emulators from the cloud so

By 2004 I was already playing a lot of the SNES games I cared about on my Xbox via XSnes9X. I don't think it ran games with special chips, so no Star Fox or Super Mario RPG, but everything else I wanted to play ran great. My Xbox was my Super Nintendo for like fifteen years.

Now that I'm all PC all the time, I just use Mesen for everything.

From what I've heard through the grapevine, it got mega-turbo-ultra pozzed at the same time as everything else online. I'm glad all my memories are of the anarchic, edgy LUE.

Inconceivably pozzed, and after it shut down the lifeboat site they made for it went even further. As someone else said, literally everything is on the level of Resetera or RPG.net these days. Apparently there was a KF data breach that one of the LL tranny mods got ahold of and went around banning anyone who showed up in the leak.

KF is the only place on the internet where I can be a normal person from 10 years ago.
yeah it's crazy bad. even gimmick accounts aren't safe. potty time (the dude who made the ralph pootawn second life troll account) showed up on the new site and made a post that was obviously made up about spying on his niece taking a shit or something like that and he got chased off and called a rapist for doing the same shit based gimmick he'd been doing for 20 years. it was kind of pathetic really he was so apologetic. was like I'm so sorry I'll leave forever I was just trying to be funny. and it wasn't particularly funny, he never really has been but dude was a legendary poster who had always been disgusting just for the sake of being disgusting and had never broke character in 20 fuckin' years and got chased away after being on the current iteration of LL for 2 hours last year. now there is some sort of mod ban wave happening for anyone who's in discords with all the funny users who left basically. at this point it's going to be more pathetic that the LUE board on gamefaqs itself because there will be an equally small amount of users sperging out on their secret website to literally nobody.

I remember being something like 12 years old, playing one of the GTA games and a friend of my stepfather being over at the house enjoying the game with us. He had a handwritten note with a cheat’s website on it that he was told had gta cheats on it. It was obviously gamefaqs but I wasn’t aware of the website and he wasn’t either and this man was certain it was “gamefags” and had a 12 year old type that in the address bar and click return. Since then I’ve grown fond of the thinking about all time and effort gamers put into all the guides there for old games. So much more effort than games websites do now where there’s actual money involved.

Is that dude who's been pretending to be a "18 year old bisexual female furry" for twenty years still around? I think his name was like Mega Trout or something.

lol yeah, a lot of user names are different now since the switch to the new site and I don't go there enough to keep up too much. really the whole type of environment is so different now. there has been good bannings and stuff over the last few years, you know people who actually committed crimes or were weird with kids and shit but for the most part the culture is just so radically different most people were run off or left themselves to get away from it.

sometimes it flat out astounds me some of the retarded shit on there though so I look anyways. I told a humorous anecdote about my woman not knowing what some type of sexuality was when someone described themselves to her and she thought they were telling her they were some kind of scientist or something and the response I got to that post was a bunch of CONGRATS ON THE TERF GF, YOU SHOULD DUMP HER SHE'S TRANSPHOBIC blah blah blah and I was like are you people retarded (I didn't say this because the R-word is a permabannable offense now) the point is she's just a total idiot, it's not a hate crime to be stupid.
