It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

For the third day in a row in Russia, an incel retard thirsting for a woman murders her man.

Day 1: a guitar player, member of the group Menstruation of a Pozzed Pig, tries to murder the vocalist. (He may yet survive but will be severely crippled for life if he does: broken legs, fingers cut off, punctured lung, scalped, concussed. The perp also cut off the woman's hand.)

Day 2: a hustling yuppie drug dealing sk8r boi murders his employer's equally hip but less retarded also sk8r boi son (his coworker) with a machine gun. The news screamed OMG HIRED KILLER THE 90S ARE BACK but no, it's inceldom again.

Day 3: a woman's stalker murders her husband, a young Christian nationalist politician. They had reported the stalking, the cops did nothing but caught the perp before the news had the time to scream HOHOLS.

Two takeaways:
  • laws and speedy police action against women's stalkers protect the normal men, too
  • social class and good behavior don't matter as much as you hope they do

New kitty color has dropped

Article
The village of Petäjävesi in central Finland is home to farmland, lakes, an 18th century wood-log church and a group of unusually striking cats. With their white chests, these creatures look similar to other tuxedo cats, but they possess a distinctive bit of flair: ombré strands of fur that start dark at the root and fade to white.

Geneticist Hannes Lohi and his collaborators at the University of Helsinki wanted to know how these cats got their look, so they studied the animals’ DNA. The team’s report, published May 9 in the journal Animal Genetics, found that a novel gene mutation gives rise to the exceptional fur pattern, which they dubbed salmiak, or “salty licorice,” after a popular Finnish treat.

The project was a collaboration between the university, which houses a biobank of 5,000 blood samples from more than 40 feline breeds, a pet care company that makes genetic tests, and cat owners and breeders who offered their companions’ DNA for research.

“Our research approach is community science,” Lohi, who was corresponding author on the study, told CNN. “Often, the research ideas also come from cat owners and breeders having found something interesting in their pets.”

In this case, people first observed the unusual white coloring among Petäjävesi’s cats in 2007. Lohi and his team collected samples from five of them and found that none exhibited the gene variations that typically give rise to white coloration.

To home in on the genetic cause, the researchers sequenced the full genome of two of the cats and discovered a previously unknown mutation that affects a particular gene called KIT.

The team called the gene variant w-sal, for salmiak — black licorice with a speckling of white salt. The researchers tested the salty colored cats and 178 normal-colored samples from the biobank for the new gene variant. Each of the five salmiak cats had two copies of the recessive gene. A few of the other cats had one copy (not resulting in the unique color), and the rest had none.

“One of the fascinating aspects of the study is that it uncovers a really sophisticated way in which this very important KIT gene is normally regulated,” said Greg Barsh, a professor of genetics at Stanford University, who was not involved in the research.

In addition to controlling hair color, the KIT gene encodes for proteins in red blood cells and the cells that become sperm and eggs. Sometimes gene variants that give cats (and dogs) white fur can also cause deafness, though that doesn’t seem to be the case with w-salmiak. It’s one of many ways in which gene mutations that affect hair color can cause issues in other parts of the body.

The larger goal of this and other biobank work, Lohi said, “is to understand the molecular and environmental causes of feline disorders.”

The University of Helsinki has several ongoing projects with Wisdom Panel, which makes pet DNA tests, to look at the genetics of different diseases. And since genes are often similar across mammal species, what Lohi and his team learn could help not just cats but also humans with related medical conditions. None of the study coauthors have a financial stake in Wisdom Panel, Lohi confirmed.

Now that salty licorice cats are officially a thing, could they become the next designer breed?

“It is possible that breeders will choose to develop a population of salty licorice cats,” Lohi said. “However, the health of the salty licorice cats should be followed in more detail to confirm the absence of any color-related health issues.” Tailored genetic testing could be used to ensure the cats are bred without passing on dangerous genes.

“If there are enough people out there that think, ‘Oh, this is really rare and they’re really cute,’ then it could become very popular,” Barsh said. “That is really more of a question having to do with the relationship of humans to companion animals than the science itself.”

Massive, 26-pound rabbit rescued from California highway

Massive, 26-pound rabbit rescued from California highway

A massive rabbit weighing in at 26 pounds was rescued from alongside a busy California highway and taken to a rescue group.

California Highway Patrol officers based in Santa Cruz were summoned to the side of Highway 17 when construction workers spotted the chonky bunny on the loose.

The rabbit, dubbed Bugs by CHP officers, was taken to Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists before the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter gave the big bunny a lift to a Mill Valley rabbit rescue group.

The rescue said the animal is believed to be a female Flemish giant rabbit, a popular pet bred for their massive size.

Officials said minor injuries to Bugs' face and back of her neck indicate she may have been snatched from an outdoor enclosure by a predator, but managed to escape before becoming a hoppy meal.

Bugs will be held as a stray for four days, allowing her owner to claim her before she is put up for adoption.

A mandrill monkey living at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona has been confirmed as the oldest in the world at the age of 37.

The female mandrill, named Nikki, was born the Oregon Zoo on Jan. 13, 1987, and has lived at the Phoenix Zoo for the last six years.

Zoo officials told Guinness World Records that Nikki is more than twice the 18.3-year median life expectancy of a mandrill, the world's largest species of monkey.

Nikki's half-sister, Victoria, also had a long life before she died at the age of 35 in April 2022. The two monkeys were brought to Arizona from Oregon in the hopes that the climate would better suit their health in old age.

"I think it helps not having harsh winters, as the cold is hard on the joints," Nikki's caretaker told Guinness World Records. "Her mandrill companions are also very laid back, and she has adapted a good routine."

Nikki has now been certified as the oldest living mandrill in captivity. Guinness World Records said the oldest mandrill on record was a female who was confirmed to be 40 years old at the Dallas Zoo in 2004.

Apologies for double post:

Skateboarding cat breaks speed record in China

Skateboarding cat breaks speed record in China

A skateboarding cat showed off his skills in China and earned a Guinness World Record by skateboarding a distance of 32 feet, 9.2 inches in just 12.85 seconds.

Bao Zi, an American shorthair cat, broke the record for the fastest 10 meters on a skateboard by a cat at the age of just 1 year and 8 months old.

Bao Zi's owner, professional dog trainer Li Jiangtao, said his original intention when he brought a cat home was to help with a rodent problem.

"We had mice running around the ceiling at night, so I got Bao Zi to scare them away," he told Guinness World Records.

Jiangtao said he soon realized Bao Zi might have talents beyond mousing.

"I've been training dogs for over a decade, and I started skateboarding with my own dog for fun. But Bao Zi showed a keen interest in skateboards, so I decided to nurture this behavior," Jiangtao said.

He said it took about a year for the feline to master the art of skateboarding.

"Actually, it's quite challenging to train a cat, because they don't learn things as quickly as dogs do," he told the South China Morning Post. "Dogs make improvements day by day and they remember it. As for cats, they can learn a trick, and then forget it the next second."

Jiangtao said his experience teaching Bao Zi led him to expand his business into training cats. His specialty is teaching felines to use toilets -- and flush when they finish.

I'm more amazed a Chinaman trains a cat instead of eating it.
I'm more amazed that @Sundae posted that fantastic article in the clickbait thread rather than as its own article. It's wrong to hide gems like that.

I'd report the post so it can be moved to its own thread but my report button is missing for some reason.

Woman, 18, Meets Guy On Dating App, Gets "Cold Feet," Calls 911

After matching with a man on a dating app, an Iowa woman exchanged texts with him before arranging to meet in person yesterday at her residence.

But when Sumaya Thomas, 18, got “cold feet,” she dialed 911 in a remarkably harebrained bid to avoid an IRL interaction, according to cops.

As detailed in a criminal complaint, Thomas, who lives in an Iowa City suburb, called police to report that her abusive ex-boyfriend had shown up outside her residence and was sending her threats via Snapchat to “hit, punch, kick, and stab her.”

Thomas claimed that she “has known this man for two years and that she was pregnant with his baby.”

Officers responding to Thomas’s residence encountered a “male leaving the scene” and began an “in depth investigation about the reports being made.” The man, who was detained by police, explained that he began speaking with Thomas “just over a week ago on a dating app,” and provided text messages that showed “he was being honest and he really did just meet this female.”

After multiple interviews with police, Thomas (seen above) admitted she had been lying, claiming she “got cold feet on meeting him and no longer wanted to.” She fabricated her tales of abuse because she “didn’t think officers would help so she made up this call and the events that she described.”

After being read her rights last night, Thomas, cops reported, explained she pulled the 911 gambit “because she didn’t want the male here and felt we wouldn’t be able to do anything if she just called normally.”

Thomas, seen above, was arrested for placing a false 911 call and making a fake report of an indictable offense, both of which are misdemeanors. Thomas was released from the county jail earlier today following her initial court appearance.

The Amerimutt meme is real, gentlemen.

That coach was fired for saying an inconvenient truth.

The head track and field coach at a high school in Oregon has been fired after writing letters to state officials expressing his concerns about allowing biological males to compete with girls.

John Parks, who had been employed at Lake Oswego High School since January of last year, says his contract was terminated shortly after he began speaking out against trans-identified males self-identifying into female races.

Parks explains that he first wrote the Oregon Student Activities Association with his concerns just before the controversial May 18 state championships where a trans-identified male student participated with the girls.

The student, Aayden Gallagher, had been the source of much outcry after dominating a number of races in the qualifying matches leading up to the state championships. In April, Gallagher won multiple awards in Girls Varsity races, but he finally secured his place at state on May 9 when he took two gold medals at the Portland Interscholastic League meet.
