Vhs tapes generally used either diamonds, horizontal bars, small squares (sometimes oriented as diamonds), or small rectangles. This tape has a pattern that repeats. Rectangle, square, square, rectangle. I feel like I have seen that somewhere before and noted it because it was abnormal. Doing an image search and a manual search now I cannot find a cassette with this pattern.
Hey, thanks for helping me look into this. Welcome to the Farms. It really irks me that I can't find what tape this is, and I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was starting to feel a little crazy lol. I actually never really paid much attention to the pattern. I haven't been able to find a tape with this specific pattern either. As far as I can tell Japanese and US Maxell tapes had identical patterning. I did a bunch of searching last night and started to think that the tape might be a fake Maxell blank tape? Two things really stand out to me. Firstly, on the spine of the tape it just says "Maxell T-120 GX" instead of a code like pictured this:
I'll find the link if I can, but I saw someone on tapeheads.net say that counterfeit Maxell cassettes used to be common. I can't find any reference to counterfeit VHS tapes, but I think it stands to reason that low cost counterfeit Maxell blanks back then could have been made and sold. That
could explain the weird patterning and markings on the tape.
Another thing, wouldn't a blank tape typically have a blank label on it so that the end user could write their own title? Why would someone at Nintendo Power print, cut, and paste a custom label to the tape? Secondly, why is VHS stamped into the top of the tape twice? It just seems weird. It's possible there is a code underneath the label.
I reached out to the seller and asked how they got it. He responded with, "I own a store. Someone donated about 7 boxes of vhs tapes that I’ve been sorting through on here the past 3 months. This is just another one of them. Most of the stuff I post on here keeps getting taken down because it’s too gnarly and hardcore. Like borderline mondo murder films. This tape was in there, as well as tons of recorded off tv children’s shows." Then he sent a second message saying he didn't know any more and didn't even remember who donated it.
some businesses will make the address based on the return address they received on the envelope.
I think this is completely possible. It's totally possible that Chris mailed in to Nintendo Power from Charlottesville, VA. Part of what drives me nuts about this tape is that as far as I can tell, "Charlottesville, NC" isn't actually a place that exists. It's also completely possible that whoever was labeling just messed up.
The person selling this on eBay doesn't strike me as manufacturing scam tapes, but it's completely possible that they got their hands on a scam tape.... The typeface used for the address is a form of courier, which really doesn't tell us a lot because while it was around it is also one of the most popular typefaces to use when counterfeiting a retro product because it's commonly known to have been around and is relatively easy to work with in photoshopping programs without becoming obviously updated.
At first I really was leaning towards the seller just accidentally getting a fake tape and not knowing what it is. He seems to sell a bunch of other rare VHS tapes and otherwise seems completely legit. The typeface being used in retro counterfeits is interesting, and I would imagine that as this seller seems familiar with vintage VHS, he would know that. If he were to make a fake tape, he probably would use this typeface.
There is credence to the story of getting the tape in a big box of other tapes, particularly recorded children's tv. He's selling a clearly homemade tape of some Canadian tv show called Treehouse, which is dated 2003. 2003 being the
exact same year that Chris made the Animal Crossing video.
Assuming the tape is fake, either the seller made it which seems unlikely? Or he really did get a fake tape in a box of other random tapes which seems really unlikely. Why would someone counterfeit a tape of Chris's video, then put it in a box with a bunch of other homemade videos and donate it somewhere? It seems even crazier if whoever made the tape already started with a bootleg "Maxell" tape.
So much about this tape is just driving me crazy.
