While Ian certainly isn't blameless for his downfall, the brunt of their demise is still due to Anisa being Anisa. Ian's going to be in for a pretty big reality check if he thinks, "dropping into the trades" at his age is easy. He has zero practical skills that would translate into industry and he would be a liability until his training is completed and has at least a couple of years of experience under his belt. Even overlooking the amount of younger potential hires that already have experience, an employer will view him as an expense for at least 2 years before they can expect to get any value back out of him as a worker. I know someone personally who went through this exact situation and while the potential to make 6 figures down the road is there, he started at $18/hr, and that was mainly due to having multiple personal references already employed by the union. Though watching Ian's therapy sessions about all of the "problematic" things he hears on the jobsite would be fantastic content, so I hope someone actually does give him a shot.
I also don't know what Anisa has been telling him about Alberta but he's competing for jobs with jacked conservative farm kids who have been preparing for this since they were 15 like you say about younger candidates. A lot of the schools in the province have extensive programs to get trades experience before even graduating that have always been popular with basically anyone who doesn't intend to go to university or just snag an easy degree and hit the rigs. He's going to be buffing concrete or something for 18/h like you say for years and doesn't really have the body for a lot of the jobs that get you in fast like shingle-hauling.
