I was not at all ready for that spoiler. Im waiting on my oven timer and casually browsing these threads only half reading comments... holy shit. Can you imagine having to run away from an active shooter wearing only a strap under your buttcheeks? Did he remove his weiner from his own mouth before or after the first shots? My god.
But for real, I really hate that those people went through what they did in that shooting and cannot imagine experiencing something so heinous. Heartbreaking.

This is a bit OT, but I've mentioned before that Desmond reminds me of a young Milo Yiannopolous. Milo's having a small meltdown on twitter now after his father had died and he's been talking about his mom and how her behaviour enabled what he eventually became.
I'm not gonna discuss whether there is some truth on that, because it's a bit irrelevant, but here are some highlights to consider:
He's said before that after his parents left him, he lived among gay people since he was a kid with his grandma. He's mentioning that he truly dislikes now his mother because he blames her for the things that he did:
I know that a lot are saying "it's not their fault, it's your own decisions", but Milo had a similar childhood to Desmond's, a mother (and a grandma?) enabling certain behaviours that they thought were normal and funny rather than dangerous for a young boy still in development. And we know he was indeed sexually abused when he was a teen. So, yes, there is some similarity between these two aside from the physical similarities. Why they both have the ability to choose, when you're so fucked up in childhood, you take bad decisions in your older years.
Even if Desmond wasn't actually sexually abused, all the exposure to sexual degeneracy and the loose parenting of his mom (and the father's implicit absence) is gonna make him become another Milo, a sexual degenerate that's gonna be an easy target for older predators and become associate with other people who are as lost as he is. I really don't think that Desmond's not getting more than 2000 dudes by the time he reaches 20 as well. I hope he doesn't, but I think this is what's gonna happen to him.

As you say, Milo's older and more lucid. He knows what the things he did are wrong and despite his attempts to become straight are laughable, at least we can always say that he was raised to become gay and he did out of spite and because he was groomed by an older man.
Desmond, while not particularly sexually abused -that we know- was probably born straight until his mother got him into that world of degeneracy where it's normal that gays parade with their dicks out in front of minors because it's self-expression. She's also taught him how "amazing" is to be a fag. Those are the same things Milo claim his family did to him. The difference is that Milo went through a very public meltdown after being accused of being a pedophile, losing everything, and finding his way out. Desmond, at the moment, it's encouraged to carry on his behaviour by his family, corpos, and the government.

His most powerful validation has come from social media and performing a character until he became that character. Brief flashes of approval from faceless strangers, all adding up to a blinding light. He has bathed in that glow for years now. It's all he knows.

The people who surround him, online and off, create the cult space with an endless loop of positive feedback. He is what they made him. And that may be all he is, because it's all he's ever known and all he's been allowed to have.
Somewhere along the line a kid develops a sense of self, creating the foundation on which the adult will be built. It's that foundation he should be growing and nurturing now, at this critical phase in his life.
But I'm not sure he was ever given the chance to lay that foundation. The adults around him pointed to a pile of slutty women's clothes and pride flags and told him "this is who you are".
There is no Desmond, there is only "Desmond". At his core, where the real Desmond should be, is a void.
