If I understand the law correctly (which I probably don’t) crypto isn’t considered taxable income until you sell it for fiat, sell it for another type of crypto, or stake it. It’s also taxable if you get paid in crypto which would include his $8k per week.

From the looks of it, he probably won’t be responsible for taxes on the full $180k because he never truly cashed out to fiat. It truly depends on how much he loses before selling his crypto for USD.

Regardless, it looks like his crypto wallet platform Exodus doesn’t report to the IRS. Even though he would be responsible for what he cashes out, its likely that he won’t bother thinking about it unless they send him a tax form. Uncle Sam is a fucking rat, anyway.

If anyone has a better understanding of crypto taxes please correct me.

Everything is a taxable event. Don't get me started on how this makes DeFi borderline impossible to calculate taxes for. Imagine explaining to the IRS your justification for how you calculated the cost basis of the $BUTTAIDS you sold for $CUMMIES that you got air-dropped after buying a shitty NFT, none of which are actually valued in or traded in USD. Not an American? Better calculate your local fiat, convert it to USD, convert it to BTC, convert it to ETH and then finally maybe you'll figure out your cost basis in a fictional world where this things are meaningfully liquid.

If you wanna get retarded you can claim that stablecoins aren't actually USD and should also have capital gains/losses. Is USDT on ETH the same thing as USDT on Polygon chain? Perhaps there should be taxable event on crosschain swaps for the "same" asset. No one knows if this is true, but the IRS could argue it.
