Mega Rad Gun Thread

Got some Hornady Criticial Defense Lite for my Model 36 last week. 90 grain bullet, 1200 fps ( lower out of a two inch obviously). Reason being that it's a older gun and not technically rated for +p, could throw off timing with too much shooting. Pen seems sufficient from everything I've seen, albeit on the low end. Pretty happy with my purchase tbh, been wanting to get some for years.
How are the pressures? Is it likely that I blow up a 100 year old pre model 10 with this? Asking for a friend. I love my .38, but shooting the same federal LRN lower power rounds makes me yearn for at least a few blossom rounds.

prior to 1919, you will want to stick to lead round nose to protect brittle rifling in the barrel, brittle forcing cone from differential hardening that was used back then, but standard pressure 158gr cartridges at around 750 f/s is safe in blackpowder conversions, and early smokeless S&W. after 1919 through 1935, the frames were heat treated and can use more normal pressures, but still prefer to stick with LRN at normal velocities. after 1935 is when you started getting decent heat treatments for barrels you could start playing around with pressure and assuming the barrel is in good order the only things to consider are mistreatment or various issues with flame cutting the top strap, end shake that allows excessive play in the cylinder, misalignment with the cylinder and forcing cone, lots of steel jacketed ammo in war-time and war surplus revolvers that have hardened the forcing cone, making it more prone to cracks and splits, et c.

in the end: pre 1919 stick with lead round nose and 750ish velocity (4" barrel). 1919-1935 you can use normal .38 but be mindful of any revolver wear from lots of use over the years. after 1935 you should be okay even with 125gr +p if the revolver is in good condition. 1952 and further is when you can do the same in magnum cartridges.

No it won't blow up as long as it's a steel frame, your model 10 is fine. It's the springs that control the timing, the cylinder rotation. They are weaker than current production. Too much +p will damage them and they'll need replacement, which is tough since they are hand fit parts.

for a lot of them, especially the older ones and the silents, they grew up in a time where there was broad bipartisan support for a ban not only on "assualt weapons" but on pistols too. people don't understand that until the 80s-90s pistols bans were part of the conversation, CCW of all kinds was almost universally illegal and "assualt weapons", PDWs/SMGs etc were a rare sight and more often than not in the hands of criminal gang bangers. they were raised in a different time. im not excusing them but trying to give context.

gun rights have been on a exponential upswing since the AWB sunset in 2004 (which is wild that it even was allowed to sunset anyway). for the most part gun owners in 2024 have more rights than at almost any other point in US history. true, you could own almost anything during the wild west and early 1900s but it was a real gray area. now its all codified in law.

Hell, sotomayor in the bump stock ruling admitted that AR's etc were in COMMON USE. that is HUGE and no one is really mentioning it. we really could see the NFA struck down in the next 10-20 years. if it comes up on this court its more than likely even.

So true. Older people only saw guns as for hunting, regulated target shooting, soldiers and police and that's IT.

Some literally start sperging about "rrheee scary gun" when they see anything black, polymer or both.

Post-boomer generations grew up with firearms being a central aspect of popular culture. From Rambo to Call of Duty, every kid in the last 40 years has grown up and seen how cool guns are.

Boomers didn’t. If you didn’t grow up on a farm with a rifle, or get drafted, you didn’t see guns outside of the hands of police marshals on Gunsmoke or criminals on Columbo.

Guns are alien to boomers. That’s why they primarily like old western and old military firearms. Those were the things they were exposed to and allowed to use.

Call of Duty unironically did a ton for gun ownership.

It sure did. Which is why we all owe a debt to Vidya for Gun Rights. Division 1 and 2, Far cry series, Battlefield, CoD, Tarkov and similar survival shooters, the old Bond games, Resident evil, MGS, and a few others introduced MILLIONS to guns.

I noticed this. It seems to have gone over most people's heads.

It needs to happen ASAP. Isn't the NFA in direct conflict with the Bruen ruling? Regulation of so-called "short barreled rifles" and suppressors has no history or tradition preceding the passing of the NFA. Suppressors are particularly a wild thing to be regulated under the ATF's jurisdiction, seeing as they're not even firearms or explosive devices. You could make the same argument about SBRs too, since it's not the barrels themselves that are regulated, merely the accessories being attached to firearms with those barrels.

Edit: Something else I keep forgetting -- when the ATF announced their "final rule" (lol) about braced pistols, they made the argument that braced pistols have essentially been unregistered SBRs the entire time. There are god knows how many million braced pistols out there. The ATF basically made the argument that unregistered SBRs are in common use.

Interesting.

As for NFA .... I DOUBT it 😔. The moment the SC says it's illegal Congress would probably instantly pass a law making MGs illegal.

The SAFE act was as close as we were going to get and even that was super dicey.

What's the go-to recommendation for first time AR-15 buyers these days? I've long recommended a BCM upper and Aero Precision lower to first time buyers, but I have no idea if that's still the most cost effective option for steering people away from stuff like BCA, PSA, etc. I'm aware that the IWI Zion-15 could be purchased for no more than $900 over the past year or two, but then you have a rifle called "Zion-15"... I know the S&W M&P 15 Sport III was released earlier this year and has an MSRP of only $799, but I dislike that the BCG is still semi-only and the barrel is 4140 instead of 4150. These might not be issues for a first time buyer, though. I'm just curious what you guys would recommend for newbies with no more than $1000 to spend on the bare rifle.

The M&P Sport 3 looks good. The Zion 15 is a half step better.

The real pro gamer move is to get a reputable upper and male tour owner lower or if your more handy make the whole thing yourself.

A PSA lower is fine, an upper from them is A OK for a solid 5-6k rounds then you might start seeing issues.

However the next tier up of AR uppers will easily hit double that round count without issues.

No more than a Grand on an AR... Ohh Zion 15 for sure tbh.

Maybe an Aero on sale but they occasionally have wonky QC.

For an upper, BCM uppers absolutely ROCK and on semi regular occasions Geisselle uppers go for under $850.

Beyond that you're in "I'm using my rifle in a gunfight EVERY DAY and it absolutely positively has to work as I emerge from the ocean/a sandy desert/ a muddy trench" and tbh BCM and Geisselle do that as well.

It depends on use case. If you just want to shoot at trash then PSA is okay. If you want a general purpose that works for outdoors and things that go bump in the night, always suggest building. If they're incapable of assembly, Ruger's ARs are decent and they can always upgrade from that.

I always tell people to stay away from Anderson and BCA, though.

Ruger ARs still, afaik, have carbine length gas systems and are ~8 years behind the times.

Not bad rifles just not so great for the cost anymore.

That’s a funny way to spell LMT or KAC.

Ahaha between the two LMT all day everyday.

Look, I'm not about to call you a pussy for saying that a .380 1911 brings the pain, but in comparison I have shot a Ruger LCP, which weighs nothing, and did not find the recoil pleasant at all, surprisingly sharp, actually. Now, it wasn't the House of Pain like shooting .357 Mag through a Smith 340PD which came in at a slim 12 oz... that was like I put my hand face up on the range table and smashed my hand with a ball-peen, I haven't shot anything that has come close to that since.

Compared to that a .50AE Desert Eagle was downright pleasant to shoot.

The .380 P365 is a dream to shoot.

The .380 in question, it was just a mean lil guy lol. Loudest gun we shot that day, most recoil. It's a pretty gun and decent to shoot, I just wanted to add some data because "just get a .380" doesn't negate recoil as much as good gun design does. My son asked if he could shoot the .380 and that was the only one I didn't let him shoot.

Yep, the lighter the gun the worse the recoil.

Einstein said "I no not what weapons world war 3 will have but 4 will be sticks and stones"

For a smart guy he def didn't know of the Madsen or Maxim gun.

Come the xrthan invasion of 2643 ny great x7 grandson will be holding a madsen fending off the tall skink like beasts with their Ray guns

*fixed, although by then it might be an A2 or something.
"Alright you screndipulous Xey/Xhems, today on RoobleToob, we have my great grandpa's Honey Badger in 300AC. Now, I know what you're thinking. 'How did they/them even shoot this thing without interfacing with it?' Believe it or not, they used to shoot the rifles with their BARE EYES. I know, not even a hotlink smart glasses in sight, really living in the moment. Back in the day, you could even miss shots with it. Look at these archaic sights, you press this button and a literal glowing red target shows up in this little box, like a caveman video game. Anyway, after buying out an old estate sale, we finally have 30 rounds of 300 to shoot out of this."

I've never been happier to not live in CA.
They hate my two favorite things: Guns and Cars.
I have no clue how an enthusiast of either could stand to live there.
If you like guns in California, you have probably lived there your entire life and think "it is how it is". Regulations are just a part of life. I couldn't stand it.

United States v. Rahimi Reversed 8-1 in favor of the state. Thomas is the only dissent per the ruling. Funny how a black man understands the historical context and constitution better than anyone else on there so far.
In short, we have no trouble concluding that Section 922(g)(8) survives Rahimi’s facial challenge. Our tradition of firearm regulation allows the Government to disarm individuals who present a credible threat to the physical safety of others. Section 922(g)(8) can be applied lawfully to Rahimi.
Thomas is arguing that the majority were attempting to do mental gymnastics by combining affray, surety, and storage laws laws as a justification for the law in addition to the laws of 1600 England stripping firearms (which then were expressedly appealed in the Magna Carta lmao).
Section 922(g)(8) violates the Second Amendment. First, it targets conduct at the core of the Second Amendment— possessing firearms. Second, the Government failed to produce any evidence that §922(g)(8) is consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. To the contrary, the founding generation addressed the same societal problem as §922(g)(8) through the “materially different means” of surety laws. Id., at 26.

[...]
The Government, for its part, tries to rewrite the Second Amendment to salvage its case. It argues that the Second Amendment allows Congress to disarm anyone who is not “responsible” and “law-abiding.” Not a single Member of the Court adopts the Government’s theory. Indeed, the Court disposes of it in half a page—and for good reason. Ante, at 17. The Government’s argument lacks any basis in our precedents and would eviscerate the Second Amendment altogether.
[...]
Assuming C. M.’s allegations could be proved, Texas could have convicted and imprisoned Rahimi for every one of his alleged acts. Thus, the question before us is not whether Rahimi and others like him can be disarmed consistent with the Second Amendment. Instead, the question is whether the Government can strip the Second Amendment right of anyone subject to a protective order—even if he has never been accused or convicted of a crime. It cannot. The Court and Government do not point to a single historical law revoking a citizen’s Second Amendment right based on possible interpersonal violence.

Fun
That AK above it is so damn sad...

Weren't those like $8k new? I remember that FN did a run of semi-auto only ones for a bit, so I guess this is one of those.
Guess those were the Ohio Ordinance guns, like 10 years ago, which that probably is.

Surprised that its for sale in California of all places, how the blue fuck is that legal when the AK above it has to look like... well like it does.

Laws are gay
Funny you should mention the FN belt fed, buddy says one of those showd up at that same shop for the same price, apparently they have the same retarded little fin grip that the ak has, making it legal

Bullpup PSL owned by some Russian guy, differs vastly in construction compared to Idlibi examples

An image of a new, unnamed AK-12 variant has surfaced. Based on it's characteristics its most common analogue would be an AKS-74u, the gun features a metal M-lok rail and all the other features of an Obr. 2023 model AK-12. This is most certainly NOT an AK-12SPK as it had a 6 slot handguard and as far as I can tell never actually went into production.

Another new Russian firearm, the PKZ, the PKM Bullpup conversion of olde rejuvinated into a factory produced firearm featuring M-lok. Now if only the Russian MIC could actually design and produce a 5.45 LMG so that it too could be bullpupped

Zenitco "Leader" Kit on an AK-74M, has a stepped down section of rail near to the front sight to allow IR Lasers to be closer to the bore, a screw on handstop to partially cover the handguard retainer (that also might increase rigidity of the rail but idk not an engineer) and has their proprietary "Basis" rail all around including the 12' o'clock position unlike the Sport-4 kit which has pic rail. The B-33 dust cover also has two arms that mount to the rail accounting for half of it's mounting points

Those of you who know of the work of the Sumy DRG know that guys wearing leaf suits AND Heavy PC's with cockflaps can reap a bloody toll with Suppressed AK's and PKM's.

In the 6 year period of 2017-2023 Texas ATF seized nearly 1000 glock switches, 500 of which were recovered in 2023 itself

I have discovered a company, Black Steel USA, that makes a series of relatively easy to install folding gas pedal style grip aid devices for a variety of popular handguns, there has been a continuing and in some regards accelerating trend of incorporating technology and features from the Competitive shooting world into the defensive handgun world the most prominent being the MRDS and to a lesser extent compensators and most recently thumb ledge or gas pedal style devices (Tactical Development, Icarus Precision, QVO Tactical all have either some form of offering)

Issac Botkin, Brother (not Father as he is commonly mistaken for) of the ever controversial Lucas Botkin has put out a video musing over the future of the "Duty" Handgun, even going so far as to create a high quality (for the few hours he spent making it) 3D Model of a concept gun that incorporates several already existing features into an amalgamation of theoretical performance. I would highly recommend watching it, wonderfully done video. The only thing that I could think of to improve his design would be a folding gas pedal like those detailed above.
