Democrats are despairing over President Joe Biden’s debate performance Thursday night, a showing so halting some even privately raised questions about whether he should remain the party’s nominee.

Biden appeared onstage with a soft, halting voice and an open-mouthed, staring look. He struggled to finish thoughts at points, and ceded ground on issues like abortion where Democrats have an edge.

It took just minutes for Democrats to realize how bad it was becoming.

“Biden looks and sounds terrible. He’s incoherent,” one Democrat who spent time working in the Biden administration said.

“Horrific,” said another Democratic operative.

And one Democrat who’s worked on campaigns up and down the ballot said simply: “We are f***ed.”

The looming question as the debate came to a close was almost existential: Should someone else top the Democratic ticket?

“It’s hard to argue that Biden should be our nominee,” said an operative who’s worked on campaigns at all levels for over a decade.

This debate was historic for many reasons, but not least because it is taking place before each man is formally nominated at their respective conventions. The Democratic National Convention is set to convene August 19 in Chicago.

Democrats have spent much of the past year handwringing about Biden’s chances of beating Trump in an election many view as an existential one that will decide the very survival of American democracy. But Biden himself was determined to be the one to take on Trump, at one point even saying directly: “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running.”

No serious Democratic challengers stepped up to run against Biden, and at this point in the campaign he’d have to decide to step aside if Democrats were to pick another nominee. If Biden did withdraw, the Democratic nomination would be decided on the floor.

Democrats were even talking about who it might be instead: “If I was Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I’d be making calls tonight,” one said.

What in the name of heaven is the appeal of Newsom to Democrats? I literally can't think of one positive thing that has happened in or to California during his entire term as governor.

He has name recognition. That's literally it. They're searching for a dem that people have at least heard of and might not actively hate.

I know one person who is an ardent defender of Biden and the Democratic Party. Literally the only person I've ever heard defend him or his administration. The guy is a complete wonk and worships credentials. Every person who has any ideology beyond "EXPERTS = GOOD, REPUBLICANS = BAD" isn't nearly as deluded.

I got to watch the debate finally, and I must say, I'm more shocked that Biden was able to stand up and give his canned responses than I am by how Trump bulldozed him in the debate. My take away was how weak Joe came across through the whole thing, especially whenever he couldn't give a verbal response because Trump was talking. Biden has two facial expressions, shockedpikachuface.jpg and smug disdain. Any time Trump mentioned the maltreatment of veterans or the open border, Biden would do his shockedpikachuface.jpg as if what Trump has been saying for the passed 8 years is a fresh kind of heartless and scandalous. Occasionally he'd pull the smug grin of contempt whenever Trump would talk about Biden's failures or his own successes, and this was obviously supposed to come across as a Plinkett "how embarrassing!" when it really just comes off as having "I'm so much better than this" contempt for the subject matter itself. After which, the smirk would slowly melt off his face as no, it did not magically eviscerate Trump and halt his speech, with Biden obviously disappointed with how ineffective it was.

Biden's entire demeanor was low rent and low artillery, whereas Trump carpet bombed Biden relentlessly. Biden's half of the debate was so nondescript that I don't even remember what most of it was, except for when he was finally forced to answer the border question, at which point he brought out the dead horse rhetoric of "kids in cages," an Obama admin policy. Nothing Biden said had any ring of sincerity to it, Joe only used the "kids in cages" talking point because he heard other people talk about it and was probably coached to say it. Everything he says is a regurgitation of ancient party rhetoric and any rhetoric that wasn't generic and boring was desperate straw grasping, even going so far as to cry about the Charlottesville tiki torch protest. I had completely forgotten that even happened until he brought it up, and even then I don't care.

I can't even say that Trump did remarkably well so much as his opponent was like a defenseless scarecrow. By far Biden's best move was playing the J6 card but even that fell flat when he said it was a joke to call the J6 people patriotic, which is ironic because the country got its start with things like the Boston Tea Party. In any other country Biden might have had a point, but since this is the United States, I'd call an unruly, impromptu flash mob rebellion of that sort patriotic.

I'm also disappointed by Trump's lack of total opponent demolishment, there was a point where Biden started boasting about how much he cared about American soldiers. There were half a dozen ways Trump could've utterly devastated Biden's claims to giving an iota of a shit about veterans or soldiers, and the one I wish he did most was "you care about soldiers so much you kept checking your watch as their caskets passed you by."

While Trump did indeed steamroll over Biden, he didn't quite parking-lot-ify him like I hoped for.

It's also remarkable how Biden is so unaccountable for any of his blunders or mistakes. Biden's two foremost rhetorical devices are "that's a damn lie!" along with "and to think (insert purportedly absurd subject matter here)." Biden mostly deflects all criticism as being unfathomable and divorced from reality, he can basically do no wrong. Everything Biden says in his own defense sounds like a deadbeat fishing for whataboutisms. At least when Donald Trump denies an allegation, he gives some explanation as to why it couldn't be possible, Biden will just dismiss it outright and then make an over the top claim about how excellent his administration is.

Biden's blowhard demeanor almost makes me grateful he's been unintelligible for the majority of his term, he seems like a real self absorbed asshole when he's coherent. He seems detached and callous now, I can only imagine how insufferable he would be if he were twenty years younger. He was probably a giga-douche for most of his life.

I don't have much to say about Trump's part of the debate, he said most of what I was expecting to hear but not all of it. He made great points several times that were left unaddressed by Biden with the exception of just calling it a lie. I'm honestly impressed by how Biden just ignores problems or acts like things are way better than they are. It honestly explains a lot about his presidency.

Honestly, if I didn't already know that Biden was just a lazy do-nothing, I would think he's an anarchist with how permissive he is about things like the border, crime and the economy. He generally acts like any kind of law enforcement is a crime against humanity, unless it's in his back yard. Biden has no ideology or ambition, he just doesn't give a shit, and he expects to keep the White House as a given.
Biden's presidential victory was a monkey paw wish from the Democrats. Now they're reaping what they sewed from the last four years. No way in Hell they could recover for this.
And to think they spent a week pumping him full of pharmaceuticals and steroids and rehearsing answers for debate questions and this is the meager performance he gave with the stars aligned in his favor.

Finally one thing they're honest about. Also, this is exactly why Joe winning was so unbelievable. The guy is a total wreck. No charisma, incomprehensible, senile, completely weak and pathetic.

If it was someone like Newsom, as rotten as he is or that fuck, Scott Weiner, you can at least somewhat understand how they won. This one is was a complete disaster. The graph on the voting surge was obvious, there was also the boxes upon boxes of ballots that 'miraculously' appeared, and the literal coup de tat that happened in the White House with all those burger grunts showing up. And there is no coming back from that particular action and it happened because of complete TDS.

The cattle is spooked and there is no coming back from that not until a few decades when things aren't so shit. Too bad it will be shit for a long time and its only going to get worse with war looming on the horizon.

bring back Surf Mommy
She came to town with no fanfare, simply showed up one day to see how everyone was doing, unlike the President, who never came, and the former President, who came to talk about himself and pass out bottles of water that quickly became a collectors item instead of a much needed commodity. I liked her before that, and like her even better after. I don't care what party she's in.
