Democrats are despairing over President Joe Biden’s debate performance Thursday night, a showing so halting some even privately raised questions about whether he should remain the party’s nominee.

Biden appeared onstage with a soft, halting voice and an open-mouthed, staring look. He struggled to finish thoughts at points, and ceded ground on issues like abortion where Democrats have an edge.

It took just minutes for Democrats to realize how bad it was becoming.

“Biden looks and sounds terrible. He’s incoherent,” one Democrat who spent time working in the Biden administration said.

“Horrific,” said another Democratic operative.

And one Democrat who’s worked on campaigns up and down the ballot said simply: “We are f***ed.”

The looming question as the debate came to a close was almost existential: Should someone else top the Democratic ticket?

“It’s hard to argue that Biden should be our nominee,” said an operative who’s worked on campaigns at all levels for over a decade.

This debate was historic for many reasons, but not least because it is taking place before each man is formally nominated at their respective conventions. The Democratic National Convention is set to convene August 19 in Chicago.

Democrats have spent much of the past year handwringing about Biden’s chances of beating Trump in an election many view as an existential one that will decide the very survival of American democracy. But Biden himself was determined to be the one to take on Trump, at one point even saying directly: “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running.”

No serious Democratic challengers stepped up to run against Biden, and at this point in the campaign he’d have to decide to step aside if Democrats were to pick another nominee. If Biden did withdraw, the Democratic nomination would be decided on the floor.

Democrats were even talking about who it might be instead: “If I was Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I’d be making calls tonight,” one said.

He was a brick through the window of an extremely disconnected political class and their contemptibility does a lot more to drive his success than his own strengths do.
I don't know how people can think that either. I don't understand how people can imply Trump isn't likable when he was a pop culture darling in the 1990's, appeared on wrestling, had his own television show and basically coasted off his brand name. If you want to call him insincere or a liar then fine. But I don't get implying the man isn't running a Charisma build.

I honestly think these people believe their own propaganda. They literally thought epic "spry behind the scenes" biden was gonna epically own dementia drumpf.
I just realized this cope is 1:1 equivalent to DesTiny and his (up until recent) cope for dressing like a slob with cum-stained sweatpants whenever he’d go to a public debate or speaking function. His supposed “logic” was that he could be dressed like a shiftless mentally ill shutin with sweatpants and anime t-shirts and then he’d “reveal his power level” and show everyone that he’s “super smart” even if he’s dressed like a NEET in front of a large live audience. Of course in DesTiny’s case, being “super smart” means taking a bunch of adderall and regurgitating Wikipedia articles. And in Bidens case, being even remotely capable means taking a bunch of adderall and regurgitating whatever you hear in your earpiece.

I don't disagree that the man is likeable, I just think it took a back seat to how much his base fucking detests everything associated with the old political norms.

I don't know why Trump makes everyone come off like dancing retards. He shouldn't be able to pull this shit off.
Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.
and they'd have an excuse not to have any more debates "We already did that."
Even if Biden wasn't a dead man walking, it wouldn't have worked anyways as refusing to debate demonstrates weakness in a Democracy. Trump would win those debates by default.
And also a Republican. People forget that, just because he was gov of California.
Schwarzenegger also forgot he's a Republican. That's why he sold out to the California Assembly and allowed to quietly term out. He started off his political career like Trump actually. He first got in on a Recall election of Grey Davis for the energy crisis, but then took in a Democrat for Chief of Staff, so he quietly reneged on his populist stances that he had previously. He became a California Swamp creature, but the economy in the 00s was pretty good back then, so no one called him out on it.

Now, this is speculation on my part, but that Recall election really freaked the Democratic party out and that's when they laid the groundwork to make their single party state. The next governor after him was Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown Jr., who is a full on apparachik and quietly fortified the electoral system with the jungle primary. Since most of the population lives in Blue areas, not red, they have the majority, especially when they get a bunch of illegal immigrants in to votemax.

Trump's success basically comes down to him having decades of experience dealing with media pressure and dealing with a cutthroat real estate industry. He's so tuned into dealing with pressure that he actually does better when he's on the backfoot.

And he is able to put that pressure onto his opponents, most of whom have never had so much as a tough interview in their decades-long careers. That's especially true of Democrats, who virtually never get any real pushback by the media, and so have no experience in how to deal with haggling critics or a "bully" that mocks them to their face. Look how angry he got Biden by just poking him on his shit golf game.

He also had the good sense of timing to wait to really run for POTUS until a time when the bases of each party were thoroughly tired and ready to overthrow their own party officials after a decade-plus of war, a weak economy, and political corruption run amuck. He waited until his opponent was going to be a very unpopular Democrat hated by her own base (someone he also knew personally, of course), and the brother of a very unpopular President that Trump had already spent a decade attacking for forever wars.

I know a lot of people's frame of reference for all future politicians will always be the Clintons but Michelle has zero ambition for the presidency. She isn't going to run for shit. She actively resented Barack for dragging her into national politics by the end of his 2nd term and is a major reason why they both fucked off to play Hollywood instead of sticking around to shepherd the party once Hillary fumbled the bag.
There's a reason only Barack is showing up to fundraise for the Bidens and Michelle basically leaves them on read whenever they ask for help.
I still say Michelle wants to be the next Oprah, not a politician. The first thing they did after leaving the WH was to get in bed with Netflix, after all. They probably initially intended to get her a talk show and it just never manifested, because she isn't actually very charismatic or has a work ethic.

I wanted 4 more years of Biden hoping he'd have a senior moment and say "nigger" during a speech.
I would pay an absurd amount of money for this to occur. The funny part is that it's not even out of the realm of possibility for him to have a flashback to the good 'ol days.

Unrelated: Does anyone know when Trump was going to announce his running mate? I thought I read he was announcing before the debate but I guess I was mistaken.

Ok, I'm going to predict something funny, but it's possible they will run John Kerry in 2024. Remember when they wanted him to run against Bernie in 2020? That's going to happen, and Trump will be reelected.
I would vote for John Kerry, I named my first cat after John Kerry because I was indoctrinated by demshit parents. He’s better than either guy on the ticket right now. He has a disgusting face.

I kinda feel bad for the democrats, they put all of their eggs in this one basket, only to realize that basket was full nitro glycerin about to blow up in their faces. I have friends who were so disappointed in this debate and were saddened at the idea of another term for Trump, and my heart goes out to those folk, but in the words of the great philosopher John Locke "It sucks to suck."

I don't know how bad the first Reagan-Mondale debate was but I guarantee it was nowhere near as bad as this. Reagan also was a competent, arguably good, President with a decent record to run on. Biden is an incompetent, absolutely shit President with absolutely no successes to run on, which is why he has to try and put his opponent in prison

Basically there's no fixing this for Biden
It was just as bad in terms of the debate. The biggest difference is it was a debate between two collegial politicians during a time when political opponents still viewed each other as loyal opposition instead of whatever deranged mentality exists in people these days personified in an entitled, 200 year old meat puppet and the "you're fired" guy.

Reagan looked like a confused, lost puppy in that debate and it ended up in the same "get rid of him, he's way too old" discussion. Then, in the second debate he did really well and also kind of saved the election with his comeback joke when asked about how his age became an issue - "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." This about a guy who had been a long term senator, vice president, attorney general of MN, etc.

Reagan hadn't been polling that well before that, when John Glenn was looking like the dem nominee he was polling ahead of Reagan by a half dozen points but then Mondale got hot. It was the same "too old to be president" stuff, the first debate proved it, and then Reagan visited a certain crossroad at midnight and had a dark man tune his guitar or something. One catchy joke and the Berlin Wall ended up getting torn down. They were interesting times.

Are you coping right now? It wasn’t just bad. Biden answered 0 questions. He had all his talking points hammered home and he made sure how to hit all of them without any relevance to what was asked.

That wasn't cope. @kcbbq gave you a well thought out post that more or less accurately described the events and the context of the time, based upon your statement.

It was a very good post.

I’m pretty sure Reagan answered more questions correctly than Joe. Even if it was just 1. What we saw last night was the worst debate in history.
