Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Was there any first person maze grid dungeon crawler from Japan with an Egyptian aesthetic? I feel like I've seen one somewhere but all searches bring nothing.
On NES there was one by Falcom, I think. Check out Tombs & Treasure, that might be it. I haven't played it but vaguely recall similar details.

Lots, especially during the early 90s.
Was it just Japanese or did it had an international release?
I think it was JPN exclusive. I have a feeling its Cleopatra no Mahou or Tombs & Treasure now but if my memory serves right I think it had SNES graphics, not NES graphics. I just want some good obscure japanese games for the NES, SNES or PC98 and I remembered seeing something like what I described on /vr/, I would take any similar or obscure game as well for those systems.

RE: NES game difficulty - JonTron said it best in his Monster Party review: "I understand the need for depth and challenge, and especially different difficulty levels, but I've always stuck by the notion that I shouldn't have to practice a casual game with the same diligence that's required in neurosurgery."
Not to humblebrag but Monster Party is easier than neurosurgery

Waxworks isn't what you're looking for but I'll post it anyway

Is there a good source port of Goldeneye for N64?

I've been loving the Perfect Dark port. I'm stuck on Attack Ship: Covert Assault on Perfect Agent, but I'd like something like that for Goldeneye. I especially want to get into Goldeneye mods like Goldfinger and Spy Who Loved Me, but the guides online all recommend janky emulator nonsense.

I lump the anti save state people with the same people that say the only real way to play Doom is vanilla with keyboard only.
There are a few games that are ruined by save states, but I struggle to think of them. Sometimes people ruin their own fun with them too. It's one thing to quick save before/after a tedious or difficult section, but entirely another to quick save after every jump/enemy.

Pretty sure nobody anywhere ever tried to ban mouse controls from Doom... I wonder how that retarded meme got started.
My guess is the Doom community. There are some real autists there. I remember when the demo for Doom 2016 came out, and before it was live there were a bunch of negative reviews because the super shotgun didn't have the same damage values as Doom 2.

Currently no, the decomp likely won't be finished for a while and i'd imagine a pc port will be similar
however 1964 with mouse injector worked fine last I played it and got it set up and running in 10 mins, it's not the most optimal but it's the best you're going to get for a while

Considered getting a n3ds for jailbreaking...until i saw the prices. Holy shit what the fuck happened in the last 4 years that prices got this BAD.
Covid lockdowns made a lot of people say “:wow: I want to experience the games of yesteryear and relive the good old days!”… which wouldn’t be a problem, except those same people either didn’t know what emulation was or were morally opposed to it. I’m still kicking myself for not getting a N3DS back when they were $70 new with a digital copy of Mario Kart 7.

One thing I'll say for save states is it actually teaches you the game if you let it. When I first ran through Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! I had to constantly abuse the save states to survive Great Tiger's magician move (where he goes invisible and spins around), now I can consistently understand how the move works and work through the game 100% straight until I get to Soda Popinski.

Got a N3DS XL the second the discontinue announcement happened around 2019. Holy shit best retro related purchase of my life as it bought it for about half of what the prices go for now

What can you do with the 3DS? I have one but I've never used it much, it's softmodded so I could play Ecclesia and Aria of Sorrow but that's pretty much it.

It plays 3DS games. I've got legit stuff on mine so I'm afraid to mess with it. There's a bunch of SMT games if that helps. Couple of N64 remakes. That Kid Icarus game I hated (both of them).

Is Xenia is a better place than RPCS3? I ask because, despite hearing how good RPCS3 is, every game is broken (GT3) or has a bunch of graphical errors (Dragons Crown, Captain America). Sure, they're minor errors like an occasional black rectangle around a sprite, or weird squares appears on character models, it's still an annoyance.

Finally finished Perfect Dark on Perfect Agent. 15 hours according to the game, but I don't know if that includes multiplayer, messing around with co-op, etc. Plus I did finish the game on Secret Agent first. Still a great game, and can highly recommend the decompile port. I'm tempted to see if the port handles fan mods. Unfortunately the only mod of substance is Goldeneye X.

I don't know if you can play DS on it as well.

There's a bunch of nice stuff on 3DS. First party Nintendo aside, my todo list includes Dylon's Rolling Western and those Etrain Odyssey games weebs swear by. There was a lot of stuff on the 3DS, but most "best of" lists just list first party Nintendo, of which there's a lot.

Same. You can take the internal SD card out and do it that way. Also, it's supposedly "non destructive", which I think means it doesn't wipe your system? Not sure.

the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games. It technically also has the DS-OS on it like how the WiiU has the Wii-OS on it. i think I remember going into the DS-OS settings to change something on it, but i forgot what it was.

Although the DS touchpad does not translate 100% well on the 3DS. I remember when i used to play Sonic Chronicles on my DSLite, I could do the touchpad commands with no issues. On the 3DS i was missing the commands most of the time even though I was doing the exact same thing.
