I am personally interested in growing areas of the site related to self-sufficiency, in the same way I was interested in growing the crypto/metals business board. That board is not very active, as far as pop culture goes, but it's decently active and its posters are pretty high quality, which is nice.

So similarly I'm very interested in self-sufficiency and hands on. I am unable to really work on any projects but I am meticulously planning buys and saving up. To facilitate these plans, I want a place to discuss things related.

Generally speaking this board is for the following branches of topics:
  • Projects
    • Home Improvement
    • Defensive Planning
    • Security Systems
  • Food Security
    • Canning, Jarring, and Preservation
    • Farming and Growing
    • Garden Building
  • Self-Defense
    • Of and related to one's home and land
    • Of one's body and family
    • Firearms, Munitions, Storage
  • "Prepping", and whatever that personally means to you.

I hope that this is a broad enough umbrella to attract attention but a narrow enough scope to serve a purpose. If you'd like an existing thread moved in, let me know.

Please, before creating a new thread, look to see if an existing thread already covers your topic.

Keep in mind, this is the Internet and people may use information you post online against you. The Kiwi Farms tends to be considered a particularly bad place for posting personal identifying information, but in general the Internet as a whole is a very bad place to advertise information critical to your personal security. Always exercise caution with what you disclose online.

I’m guessing the gun thread is going to be moved here? My only objection to that is that putting that thread here would put the emphasis of the thread more on practical usage of firearms and discourage other firearm discussions that I like (discussion of historical firearms, weird prototypes, etc.). Maybe it would be better to also have something like a “Practical shooting” thread.

There's definitely space for multiple gun threads. The one Hunter made in 2013 is even called "Mega Rad", so if you want to try and spin up a "Boring and Practical" gun thread, that's fine.

I just bought a new car and have been purchasing a list of things that are always handy to keep in a vehicle (Gloves, jump starter, first aid kit, seatbelt cutter etc.). A lot of it could fall under EDC even though I find EDC to be kinda consoomerist. Would be nice to have a place to discuss this stuff.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a kickstarted for anything that relates to agrarian self-reliance and land management. A solid foundational introduction for those who find the many practical aspects of working a land novel.

The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency

For now it can be found on the internet archive, but I highly recommend anyone interested to download it soon, cause we know how the archive can be, especially with that lawsuit that expunged a bunch of the stored books.

The book itself was written by John Seymour who by the books foreword:

Was educated in England and Switzerland. After studying at an agricultural college, he worked on farms in England for two years and then spent some ten years in Africa where, among other things, he managed a sheep and cattle farm and acted as a livestock officer for a government veterinary department. After service in the King's African Rifles in the war, he travelled widely, lived on a fishing boat, wrote, broadcast, and studied the way of lite of rural people. Then, with his wife Sally, he settled down to running a selfsufficient smallholding in Suffolk, where he developed many, of the skills described in this book. Alter eight years in Suffolk they moved to Pembrokeshire, and a 62-acre farm.
John Seymour has now remarried, and the farm is being developed as a school in the arts of self-sufficiency. The aim of the people on the farm is to endeavour to bring self-reliance, self-respect, people, culture and fun back to the countryside.

I think this might be a good call. I'm very much the opposite of you where I'm a 'gun guy' as much as I am a 'car guy' in that I know how to use and maintain one as a tool and less as a hobby and I don't really want to muck up too much of the minutiae guys like you enjoy but still want to get bits and bobs of info when needed.

@Null I’m thinking about starting a thread to discuss historical and contemporary warfare and tactics, something that could be useful if a boogaloo or boogaloos happen. I’ll put a disclaimer against fedposting, but I’m concerned that such a thread will cause problems for the site. Thoughts?

This is a thread I may actually be able to contribute to in a meaningful way. When I can I'll do a write up of basic canning procedures that my mom taught me. What to buy and what to can. Also hunting may be a good addition to this thread. I can also add curing meat.
