They were angry. Angry about being ignored for 50 years as the industries they worked in were gutted, angry about being scapegoated, demonized, and called every type of bigot... Mostly just angry about people in ivory towers declaring, "Let them eat privelege".
Public radio here was all kinds of handwringing about why they won't just just up and accept it when they get unpersoned for being awful, because they know better. The speakers were from civilized parts, are educated, and rural people are dumb and backwards and the rest of America needs to be controlled like this so they don't hurt themselves and others. And the fact that this is the *exact* argument that was used to justify gutting Africa for slaves is completely lost on them.
