Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

He also kept the show free from gross out which had been so prevalent in the 90s, and kept the cultural references to a minimum. When he left the gross out got amped up to tye max and now that he's dead...the show has become pure pandering, desperate to catch the attention of the tiktok generation.
Not just that, the show is a magnet for the writer's barely-disguised fetish. It was sorta there after Stephen left, it just got amped up to eleven after his death.

I think the worst part about this is the official SpongeBob YouTube channel which consists of nothing but a countdown of numerous "greatest hits" and whatever dumbass obscure topic that can be used as a countdown due to the sheer length of SpongeBob. And a good portion of those videos screams "open fetish collection" and no one seems to notice. I only know this because my little brother watches these clip collections when we have the season collections up to season 13 and (unfortunately) Kamp Koral and it weirds me out to no end. Nickelodeon and Viacom are literally not paying attention to this and possibly encouraging it because it's a golden goose and kids/autists are fucking dumb and impressionable.

No, people have noticed the fetishes, especially after the cuck episode:

This seems to be a running trend with adult animated shows with actual nuance back in the 90s/00s that doesn't devolve into Family Guy-tier raunchy low-brow jokes.
MTV's Downtown, The Oblongs' adaptation and Clerks Animated fall under this easily, besides Mission Hill being the posterchild for this. Even stuff based on decently popular material got the shit end of the stick, see how Spawn's animated adaptation got shafted and ended on an unresolved cliffhanger despite plans for another season.
I forget a lot that Duckman actually had a great run relative to the 90s standards for adult animation, given the usual story of "great for a max of thirteen episodes and then it was cancelled".

Shows that kinda did fall under the lowbrow joke umbrella still got canned if it wasn't formulaic or low effort enough. Undergrads was basically set to fail before it even aired and it was a TV pioneer in the "geek humor" niche that was overdone and obnoxious by the early 2010s.

Everyone in this thread blaming turn-of-the-millennium-era adult animated comedies getting cancelled after 1 season for not being Family Guy are objectively wrong: those shows got cancelled for not being The Simpsons. Even Family Guy only got three seasons before getting axed, with the third getting screwed over and stretched out over two years. Family Guy only came back because it pulled numbers on Adult Swim, just like Futurama.

Mistake on my end, it's true that the "not Family Guy so you're out" trend only really started after it got an audience with Adult Swim and exploded post-revival.

The Simpsons in the nineties was to adult animation what Spongebob is to cartoons skewed younger, it got a lot of promising shows axed for not being an exact replica of its success.

Which I get because that era is approaching twenty years now, twice as long as my previously described era lasted. Family Guy partially owes the passing of the crown to The Simpsons having a clear drop off in pop culture at the same time as Family Guy’s revival.

I can remember being a kid, and having a revelation that each decade had its own cartoons for kids to identify with, that were distinct from the previous decade’s. Yeah, you had revivals and remakes but those never superseded the original. But now, we’re still on animated shows that have lasted for twenty years, there really hasn’t been that changing of the guard and everything new sucks worse than the shambling corpses.

Then there was something narwhal this way cones. Narleen narwhal was already hated having been a character who was originally from the hated Kamp koral spinning off but the episode that tried to integrate her into the show well...I don't know if it's different for others but these videos were side by side and 8 results down after searching spongebob narleen narwhal on YouTube.

Plus I think narleen has an entry on wiki feet...this show essentially became another nickelodeon fetish factory after Stephen died.

Good point. It doesn't make sense that God would need to be "rehabilitated", so he can "connect" with humans; they're His creation, if anything it should be the other way around.

There was a show years ago called God, The Devil, and Bob that handled religion well in a way that was humorous, but not insulting. Shame it only lasted 13 episodes.
I watched the two episodes and it’s fine but I can see why it probably got canned. The art style feels like it should be a kids show and the family characters are just kind of irritating since the dynamics feel like the kind you’d see in any other animated sitcom.

Though the portrayal of God and the Devil is interesting and maybe it could’ve been more interesting if it was an episodic show about God and the Devil testing different people out to show the good and bad of human nature.

This joker is probably shooting up more hormones than Lance Armstrong and is halfway to tranny town, and yet I actually find myself agreeing with him. When you make me sympathize with a potential transginger, you not only fucked up, but fucked up majorly.

They should get New Norm to brutally fight Mr Birchum like when Peter Griffin fought Homer Simpson.

Then maybe I'd watch this.

Rebels Forever: ‘Ed, Edd n Eddy’ Creator Danny Antonucci Looks Back on His Much-Loved 25-Year-Old Show

I would love to see Lupo in stop motion. I spent two years developing a Lupo project for Netflix. Then, at the last second, they said, “Can you change it to PG-13?” Now, Lupo has always been an R-rated project, and after two years of doing storyboards I just couldn’t do that. Before that, Warner approached me to do my own version of Scooby-Doo. I really didn’t want to do it, but they talked me into it. After a year of legal, they canned it. That frustrates you as an artist. But I still would love to do an adult series based on Lupo. I think it just has to be done right and with the right people. I am a big proponent of animation and have adored it all my life.

Oh wait lupo is about a grown man constantly mutilating himself while running a butcher shop. Of course Netflix wouldn't care it needs more sex and nudity not gore.
Just have him chop his penis off and call it a thought provoking discussion on the lack of troon medicare or something.

Can I just say that I love that New Norm like Mr Birch has a designated black best friend character?

Even in their anti work cartoons that are so cutting edge and edgy and counter cultural they need a black best friend character to desperately signal that they're not racist.

Say what you will about the anime right #cunny people on twitter, at least they'll just say nigger instead of this cringe shit.

Hit the nail on the head. Impotent boomer politisperg shows that don't actually say anything but "wow, imagine if this were reversed!" should be laughed at into cancellation every time. None of them have whatever secret sauce Mike Judge used while making King of the Hill, because King of the Hill is a great watch whether you care for the politics or not.

From what I hear he didn't hit the mark with the more leftward equivalent show (The Goode Family), but I've not seen it myself so take it with a grain of salt.
