Gotta question the sanity of a man who, from my understanding, was taken in by a family that genuinely wanted him, raised by a religious community, and yet somehow still got it into his head that he was better than them, their beliefs, their way of life. But while also crafting the narrative that because of his deformity (I struggle to call an inconvenience, however unfortunate and admittedly pretty big, a disability) he is unlovable and people cannot and will not empathize with him. But all the way up to adulthood, people were kind to him, showed him temperance, forgiveness and patience. But that still wasn't enough, he knew he deserved more, and he didn't need to prove it either, it should be self-evident. So every lesson of humility and restraint tossed to the winds, he convinces himself that it is his ugly face that turns people away, and not the ugly person wearing the face. So the only love he can get is through paying for it.
People with his exact disfigurement go on to live perfectly normal lives, they accept their limitations and make it their own, a simple fact about them, hardly worth mentioning. But that isn't his story. God saw fit to punish him for the mere fact that he was born, and the world must know his plight.
There's a lesson in there, somewhere. But I don't have a paralyzed face, massive entitlement issues, Dunning-Kreuger effect made manifest, and don't paradoxically hate women for their ability to choose not to engage with me while desperately needing their attention and affection to validate my awful existence, so what the fuck do I know?

THE DARK AGES ARE NOT THE MIDDLE AGES/MEDIEVAL PERIOD

It was the period after the fall of the Western Roman Empire through Germanic tribes. It lasted a few hundred years until those tribes consolidated themselves into stable kingdoms and dukedoms that started regular bookkeeping and archiving of correspondence again.
It is is also not called the dark age because it was so evil and scary, it was because there is little writing and other sources, meaning historians don't know a lot about it.

If anything, christian monastery culture helped a lot in making the new nobility literate, to duplicate the classics and spread them over the continent, establish some sort of common ground between the tribes, etc. In fact, we only have the classic writings because medieval monks duplicated the hell out of them, and on paper, not on papyrus.
Papyrus is not as durable, and only a few works were copied on pergament, which was very expensive.
