Yeah definitely, New Vegas is one of the best games ever. I would say to worry less if you're making the "right" decisions, either with your build or in conversations in the world. With your build, just pick perks that sound fun to experiment with. In conversations, either pick what roughly you would do in that situation or come up with a character in your head and pick what they would do. Maybe you're a explosives-slinging badass with a soft spot for helping those in need, or a ruthless confidence man with only your own interests in mind.

I'm sure there are also lots of build guides and character ideas online. I wouldn't worry too much about following a build guide, there's no shame in turning down the difficulty. Fallout New Vegas is at it's heart, about the role-play, not the combat.

Enjoy the wasteland. Don't forget to turn on the radio and listen to the great music.

You'll probably get a better answer in the Fallout thread than here, there's bound to be people (like me) who'd love to help you get into it. Also, never played an RPG? I'm guessing since the RPG aspect is apparently intimidating to you, but you'll be fine. Then play Fallout 1, 2, and Nevada (mod). *yawn*
