UN Barcelona anti-tourism protesters fire water pistols at visitors - Demonstrators marching through areas in the Spanish city popular with tourists on Saturday chanted “tourists go home” and squirted them with water pistols, while others carried signs with slogans including “Barcelona is not for sale.”

Protesters in Barcelona have sprayed visitors with water as part of a demonstration against mass tourism.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the city in the latest demonstration against mass tourism in Spain, which has seen similar actions in the Canary Islands and Mallorca recently, decrying the impact on living costs and quality of life for local people.

The demonstration was organised by a group of more than 100 local organizations, led by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic (Neighborhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth).

According to official figures, almost 26 million visitors made an overnight stay in the Barcelona region in 2023, spending €12.75 billion ($13.8 billion).

However, the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic says that these visitors increase prices and put pressure on public services, while profits from the tourism industry are unfairly distributed and increase social inequality.

It has published 13 proposals to reduce the number of visitors and transition the city to a new model of tourism, including the closure of cruise ship terminals, more regulation of tourist accommodation and an end to public spending on tourism promotion.

On Saturday, the city’s mayor, Jaume Collboni, highlighted a series of measures that he has announced recently to reduce the impact of mass tourism, including increasing the nightly tourist tax to €4 ($4.30) and limiting the number of cruise ship passengers.

At the end of June, Collboni also announced that it would end apartment rentals for tourists by 2028 by scrapping short-term rental licenses for more than 10,000 apartments.

This would help to make housing more affordable for long-term residents, according to Collboni, who said rents had increased 68% in the past 10 years, with the cost of buying a house up 38%.

However, Collboni has been criticized for allowing events such as a Louis Vuitton catwalk show in architect Antoni Gaudí’s Parc Güell in May, as well as the upcoming America’s Cup sailing competition.

The growing discontent in Barcelona echoes similar protests in other parts of Spain.

In April, locals in the Canary Islands mobilized to protest against excessive tourism, blaming visitors for pricing them out of their homes and causing environmental damage.

These complaints are common to many tourist hot spots around the world, which have experienced record visitor numbers recently as the travel industry has roared back from a pandemic-induced downturn.

Such surges may be sweet for local economies and hospitality businesses’ bottom line, but they also come with notable downsides: increased noise, pollution, traffic and strain on resources; a lower quality of life for locals; and a diminished visitor experience, among others.

Not surprisingly, many tourist magnets have created initiatives and restrictions intended to combat overtourism, including new or increased tourist taxes, campaigns aimed at discouraging problematic visitors and attendance caps at popular attractions.

that sounds retarded, why would you pay to go on a cruise to these countries if you only want to sit on the boat? you could argue the amenities, but let's be honest, you can get those same things on shore at a resort. sounds like another example of most people being retards.
One of the other interesting nuggets of information he gave me was that passengers often rebook each year on the same ship- often getting in a piss if they can’t book the exact same cabin they had last time. Many don’t actually care about the destinations. If their favoured ship was stopping at the biggest shithole ports the world had to offer they still book, seeing as they’d not be going ashore anyway.

My guess as to the reason is probably demographics. Your stereotypical cruise ship passenger tends to be older, they are more likely to be afraid of change and want to be assured they will have a predictable good time and the ship is a controlled environment. Hence the rebooking the same ships - and there’s also repeat customer perks and discounts to encourage this, too.

Older people are also more likely to have mobility issues which may mean going ashore is difficult for them, especially in hotter and more “rustic” settings with a lot of walking involved to get to tourist attractions. They also might be scared of mixing with the locals, and there’s the fact they don’t want to spend extra money on food and drink in port which is part of the inclusive deal aboard the ship.

It’s so strange to me that these humongous, environmentally ruinous COVID and norovirus factories hold such a glamour over people when, as you said you can do all the same stuff at a resort but with a nicer and bigger room with no seasickness. But I think glamour is a big part of it- for some reason a cruise is seen as fancier than a resort.

I think your “people are retarded” hypothesis holds a lot of water.

Spain is full of fucking socialists. They know the pecking order of acceptable targets.

Personally, I hope they are all culturally enriched.
I’ve seen these retards with “immigrants welcome, tourists not signs”. I would say that they get what they fucking deserve but Barcellona is such a beautiful city and have had an amazing time there when ever I visit.

I go out of season so I don’t see the worst of the tourists scum.

Never had a problem with the locals. Getting a tabled loaded with tapas you never asked for thinking it’s going to be a way to scam you as a tourist to find out it is free because you’re in a locals bar and said “please” and “thank you” in Catalan is pretty nice.

One of the positives of the lockdowns was it fucked over the economies of a lot of cities/countries that depend on tourism. Doubt any of those living there learned they’re dependent on those tourists they hate, but it was satisfying to watch them suffer.

These are post-Covid protests. They had peace and quiet during Covid along with lots of gibbs.

Because they’re lefties they think they can have free gibbs and no tourists forever.

Not sure this anti tourism stuff is really a left or right thing. It just seems like stupidity from people not wanting to recognize what the major industry there is for many and trying to improve it if they’re that pissed about it. Like if cruise ships are terrible for the economy there, require they get off elsewhere. I’ve heard some places practically have Potemkin villages to service cruises, so it’s practically a non existent issue for locals of the region.

It’s not hard stuff to work around. Instead they whine as though it’s the tourists meant to fix their local problems.

Its always mid looking women doing these things.
Mid looking women have more angst than even the most incel of incels.

At least incels have the excuse of being virgins and angry about it.

Unironically this though. They have TOURISTS OUT REFUGEES WELCOME.

After seeing that graffiti, I say give them what they want.

Tourists spending money on the Spanish economy out.
Mid-looking Spanish women getting raped and killed by refugees in.

Any country that depends on tourism (ie the Philippines), deserves to fall simply for that fact alone.
Agreed, I know a guy who knows a guy who's planning on moving there. If you're a even decently well-off American you can live like a king there via currency exchange, but the catch is that from what I've seen of the culture it is absolutely fucking dystopian. Like shafting everything just to appease tourists, everyone's doing some kinda content creation on them Tiktacks or Jewtubes just to get American dollars and they really, honestly range from thirst traps to one video I saw of some fucking Philppine chick who's pregnant and doing a dance in front of a wrinkly-looking ugly rich bastard who's presumed to be her husband. Now my bets are on that just being view bait, but still. Realistically, how long is it gonna take before that bubble bursts?

I love to travel but hate seeing other tourists, so I'm torn on this.

On one hand I should get to travel but I'd like to be able to tour ancient ruins alone and not have to be reminded fat people exist while I'm just trying to have a good time.
I tend to travel in the winter to various European cities just to avoid them.

Every time I go in the summer I get close to punching elderly American tourists for acting like horrific entitled cunts.

Stuff like this is why we desperately need Ozempic subsidized by governments. No one should have to be around fat people.

Being against tourism is very understandable if you are a national park, or something else that traffic can ruin. Being against tourism makes no sense if you are a metropolitan city designed for such things. 14% of their GDP is tourism. Enjoy paying for your social programs in a few years, protester child.

I think the problem is that they wanted more and more. bigger cruises ships, more tourists visitng the country and so on. Now they got it and suddenly they realize what this really means. The problem is how to control it. Heck Italy tried to limit tourism in Pisa with an "entry fee" and that didn't work except giving the city an extra income (I heard there were plans to increase the fee)

Most of Europe has a tourist tax, a price per night added noto a hotel bill, is that what you mean by an entrance fee?

Cruise ships are an absolute cancer.

No that was something extra. And I made a mistake that wasn't Pisa but Venice. Tthey introduced a special fee in 2020 for visitors that varies between 3 and 10 e depending how long you stay. So basically on top of any other taxes

It's definitely a Soros thing, to try and stop everybody but the rich traveling.

In the end, like all of the 'Dick Dastardly' schemes, it won't work.

Once the UK quits the ECHR and Nigel, Donald and Vlad have their collective big hugs, we can put a 100% import tax on EU goods in order to punish Spain. Tell them 'fuck you, we too are closed for business.'

Lefties don't like tasting their medicine.

I wonder if it’s season? I don’t remember paying it but I was there in the winter time.
