A little backstory. Ethan had promised to have me on six times before and reneged every time. S'okay - he doesn't owe me anything, although I was starting to feel like Charlie Brown and he was Lucy pulling the football away at the last second. Lucy is a piece of shit for doing that, but doesn't change the fact that Charlie Brown is definitely a sucker.

So, for what was at the moment my next upcoming campaign my friends tell me to give just ONE MORE SHOT. The way I rationalize it to myself is that if he keeps his word this time I get to put in the good word for my friends and pimp their shit.

And surprise! Ethan agrees! And then drops out two hours before campaign launch. I find out later that his butt-boy Jon Malin is also launching that day. I scramble to find a replacement and Michael Bancroft has my back, fits me in at the last minute.

When I announce that the campaign is on Zoop my fellow creators all privately inform me I just fucked up BIG time, because Ethan, Malin and Mandy were planning on creating their own CG Crowdfunder site, since that 5% we give to IGG rightfully belongs to them. Suddenly, a lot of the people who said they had my back... didn't. They can't have me on to promote the campaign for... reasons. It's okay. They were afraid and I forgave them. Then the few places that do have me on? The chat is filled with people asking about Camilla Zhang.

Her name is all up in the chats. It's just, "Camilla Zhang Camilla Zhang Camilla Zhang Camilla Zhang Camilla Zhang."

Now I have no idea who this bitch is and say so. I come to find out she was working for Kickstarter when Malin got his campaign cancelled there. I also come to find out that she doesn't work for Zoop, although she once had but had been fired a year ago.

Comics haven't been that for thirty-odd years at this point, you're refusing to acknowledge that the medium isn't in the same place it started and that being disposable mass-market stories for children doesn't work anymore. You're falling into the same trap as the rest of CG where you think that if the medium goes back to how it was before everything went to shit that it'll somehow rebound without accounting for the fact that the medium now has massive amounts of competition that it can't compete with; graphic novels and european comics often sport more unique artwork and sophisticated storytelling, manga blows it out the water on value for money, online streaming means that people have access to an endless catalogue of shows and movies they can watch whenever they want and video games can offer hundreds of hours of entertainment compared to the few minutes it takes to read a 24 page floppy. The medium has to move forward and carve a proper niche for itself because otherwise it is going to die.

In regards to your other point I have no issues whatsoever with superheroes, my issue is that American superhero comics are absolutely inundated with sacred cows which prevent them from actually exploring the idea in an interesting way since doing anything other than the standard "world outside your window" will require you to violate at least one of them. And on a tangentially related note the insistence of a perpetual status quo in major comic universes reminds me of this Mitchell and Webb skit:

that's because CG was just a ponzi scheme from the beginning. the goal was never to "save the industry" it was to line their pockets off of disenfranchised marvel and D.C. fans, the books, stories and characters were after thoughts in many cases.

trying to fix the comic book industry by going back to the super edgy content of the 90s (like many of the people in CG seemed to think needs to happen) misses the crux of the issue with comics. the 90s had all of that and it crashed hard.

when you get right down to it the thing that's killing Superhero Comics isn't SJWs or Wokeness (though those are accelerating it's death) it's that they don't know who to sell to.

ideally they're made for younger readers but can be enjoyed by adults also but with the prices at $5 for 22 pages only adults can afford them and you gotta go to a comic book store to even find them 90% of the time.

and even then say little Timmy somehow makes it into a comic shop, has enough money to buy a single issue and is willing to get something and he goes up to the guy at the counter and says "excuse me sir, can i get spider-man?" and the guy goes "sure kid, which one do you want? the amazing spider-man #162342? Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 #167345? miles morales #354? Spectacular Spider-Men #453? Ultimate Spider-Man #53? Superior Spider-Man #23? none of those are complete stories by the way, you'll need to buy at least 3-5 of the previous ones if you actually want to have any idea what's going on." it's the most retarded system ever.

there is no reason Superhero comics shouldn't be thriving. every kid in the country knows and loves batman, superman, spider-man and iron man. you don't have to make everything super edgy, they just have to stop putting out garbage, make it cheaper, trim the fat and stop selling them in the dumbest way fucking possible.
