A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I've always wanted to meet Delia Smith for some bizarre reason, she seems based.

There was an interview with Delia a while back and she says she doesn't really do much in the way of real cooking now and she doesn't do anymore books on it, etc. She said that "you can only write out a recipe so many times" or words to that effect. I agree with another poster which is that she really did just do some good in teaching people normal cooking skills with a nice range of options. I have one of her books and it's just a good solid compilation of manageable recipes written in an easy to follow style. You could give it to someone with no real cooking understanding and if they followed it then by the end of the year they'd be a decent cook with a passable range. And if you gave it to someone who was already a reasonable cook they'd obviously get less out of it but they'd still get some good ideas for stuff they hadn't considered. She's always seemed a pretty decent sort to me.

Though if it's breakfast, then I'd prefer to be eating with aforementioned Nigella Lawson.

It's why I really like Rick, you rarely get cooks on TV who focus intently on one ingredient type so passionately, his restaurant in Padstow is fantastic, really basic but focuses on flavour. My spouse is from the south USA so seafood is big for us but British seafood recipes are a treasure and often overlooked.

Hands down the best fish and chips I've had in my life (and his sit down restaurant was the first time I encountered Oysters Charentaise, which are oysters with spicy sausage!). I liked he sold pots of batter. Expensive, but not really much more than what you'd pay in a chippy in London and the quality justified the price. Need to get back down to Cornwall soon if the summer actually gets started this year.

When I heard he was in hospital "with injuries", I was hoping he'd met with a bit of street justice before the police found him but I guess trying to off himself makes more sense.

BBC has confirmed he's an ex of the younger sister, Louise. Additional information seems to confirm:

Locals said that Louise had suffered a car accident last week after going through a "messy" break-up with Clifford. Neighbour Glyn Thomas told the Mail: "She drove into a wooden telegraph pole not far from the house. "Louise was a very nice girl. She'd had a traumatic boyfriend bust up the week before last."

Obviously further details haven't been confirmed but I'm guessing if she drove into a telegraph pole he was probably in the car with her and grabbed the steering wheel (rather than she was drunk or something like that).

When the crossbow was invented the British refused to use it because it was too easy to operate. They saw, for good reason, that having a lethal weapon simple enough for a child to use, meant their army was full of simps and retards. That's how bad-arse we were in war; we gave the enemy an advantage because we were so good that they needed it.

If a truly great political party ever materialises and by some miracle comes to power, they'd do well to do to the police what they should also do to the Home Office - put radiation containment shields around it and mark everyone from top to bottom as tainted until proven otherwise, then build a completely new version in parallel that piecewise assumes the roles and authorities of the old one.

Been out of commission thanks to a cold so I'm mega pissed I wasn't around to tell you all "I told you so!" when the crossbow attack happened.

I can't stress it enough: get one while you still can and start learning to use it ASAP. You might scoff at them but with the right skills, practice and knowledge you've got something that will make even the likes of Achmed Fred think twice about demanding you hand over your eight year old daughter to be his wife. It's not the damage you can do, but it serves as a warning in a similar manner to a scorpion - scorpions prefer to flee, but the stingers in their tails are more than enough to make most potential threats back off.

I'm guessing they're aiming in particular to ban pistol crossbows - they're light, they're cheap, piss easy to upgrade and are small enough to be used one handed in the same manner as a Colt revolver. Manhunt after body parts found in suitcases

‘A manhunt is continuing after a suitcase containing human remains was found on Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The historic bridge reopened on Friday after Avon and Somerset Police closed its roads in both directions to investigate the area the day before.

Officers are still looking for a man who was seen with a suitcase acting suspiciously on the bridge just before midnight on Wednesday.

The man had gone by the time they arrived, and a second suitcase containing body parts was found nearby a short time later.

The police want anyone with information about the man’s whereabouts to call 999.
He is described by police as black with a beard and wearing a gold earring.

Officers said the suspect was wearing a black Adidas baseball cap, black jeans, a black jacket, black trainers with thick white soles and had a black backpack.

The force added he left the bridge in the direction of Leigh Woods by the time officers arrived at the scene.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 's Today programme, Avon and Somerset Police Acting Bristol Commander Vicks Hayward-Melen said officers were being supported after the "horrific discovery" of the suitcases.

She added the forensic post-mortem was continuing on Friday, and would be "lengthy and complex". ‘

Some interesting eyewitness snippets not mentioned in the article are that he got there by taxi (wtf?), at least one of the suitcases was leaking gore, and apparently he hurled abuse at pursuer (who lost him) in Spanish. Also, that suspension bridge is a popular suicide spot, so it’s bristling with cameras. It seems as though he though he could just rock up and dump them over the side, then bottled it when he discovered that heaving half a corpse over the anti-jump fencing wasn’t the option he’d hoped for.
He’s a fucking idiot as I can’t imagine anyone trying to dispose of a body with a higher level of incompetence. It’s like a Chris Morris script.
