If this is true, it suggests the shooter was using something bigger than a .22. The massive damage done to the dead guy's head with brain matter also suggests this. It could have been .223 Remington (used by the AR-15) or a bigger rifle caliber. 125m isn't a hard distance to hit a target with any rifle while prone. I've heard politicians sometimes wear bulletproof kevlar T-shirt garments, but those won't stop a rifle bullet, only a pistol round. Did the shooter botch the attempt because he wanted to go for a headshot?
You can use both .223 or 556 with the AR-15. The .223 is typically for hunting or target shooting due to its lower velocity and civ standards production, while 5.56 is for more tactical usage due to its higher velocity and milspec production.

Frankly, at that distance either or could have been used but 556 would have been my ENTIRELY HYPOTHETICAL choice in this situation over the .223.

Other people mentioned it before, but Trump might have gotten cut or scraped when he was taken down by secret service. Even small headwounds bleed something fierce. In other pictures it looks like he has an entry wound on his cheek though.
Hr grabbed his ear before he went down. He was 1000% hit and it wasn't broken glass.
