.22lr is a subsonic round so there is no loud noise from a .22lr the only sound produced is the explosion of the gunpowder to propel the bullet out, but if it whizzes by your head the speed isn't breaking the sound barrier to create a sonic boom so it's not busting an ear drum, especially from as far out as he was. So he got hit in the ear by it.
