Something I've learned in the last 24 hours is that Americans are more willing to kill other Americans than they are to kill Russian/Chinese/Iranian soldiers. It's weird because even though Dems/Reps are different, Americans with different political ideologies still have a lot more in common with each other than these three rival nations.

Perhaps it could be said that same sentiment existed for many a civil war prelude. Many Americans have witnessed the same historical national events, speak the same language and may of consumed the same media but as far as core beliefs go supporting or being against DEI measures, endless immigration, gun rights and transgender issues makes all the difference right now.

Further to my previous post, it appears the bookies at SportsBet (one of, if not Australia's largest bookmakers) have shit themselves today over the swing and closed betting on the outcome of the election entirely. I did check it earlier (approx 2-3 hours ago) and it was still up, odds were something like 1.60 for Trump and 5.50 for Biden. Now this shit is just gone, only open market is on the outcome of the DNC. Even the bookies are shitting bricks that they are going to get scraped by the outcome and are in damage control mode.

Unless the bookies are playing a lot of their own money, they don't lose. The odds exist and are allowed to float such that both sides have an approximately equal amount of money to be paid out. If one side starts getting more bets faster than the other, the odds are shifted until it reaches equilibrium. The bookies make their money by taking a cut of the overall action.

I could see them suspending betting for a while after an assassination attempt. Some people have always had a distaste for political betting as the assumption is that it's a fair contest that everyone is betting on and if there's a lot of money at stake. you'll probably get people trying to cheat in some way to get a favorable outcome. Concerns over election rigging are what's usually brought up, but that's not the only way for a candidate that you've bet on to win an election.

Although now that I say all of this, SpaceX could use my sides for their next mission if it turns out that the reason for this assassination attempt is a 20 year old kid getting in way over his head with online political bets. The SS agent that domed him was probably a nicer way to go than whatever the people he borrowed the money from to bet on Biden last year were going to do to him.

I never understood why they have both subtitles and sign language sometimes. Are some deaf people really so illiterate they can't read subtitles despite learning sign language?

ASL leaves room for emotional interpretation in the signs as well, which good translators will utilize to not just drive home the message but also the meaning. For instance reading the line "Fight, fight, fight" in subtitles doesn't express the emotional intensity. The line delivered by a good signer will at times utilize different gestures or signs to better get the point across.
