I think it was the "I am a Latina Jew Woman of Color" that was a bridge too far for many.

Twenty percent of Jews are actually people of color, anywhere from brown to deep black. Even Asian! But DC isn't one of them. She's a Jew of Eastern European extraction, and that's fine! All those colors carry genes distinct to Jewish ethnicity.

I have a friend (also Jewish) whose grand or great-grandparents fled Eastern Europe; his family ended up in Peru for a couple of generations and now reside in the US. They are Latino, by any estimation. They speak fluent Spanish and know the culture and the food. They're Peruvian through and through. If Meemaw's parents grew up in??? I can't remember what South American country she said they were from, sorry, but if they did, then they're Latino—just as anyone who grows up here is American.

Loved everything you've had to say on this topic, and I've had all the same thoughts myself (hence, schizo post, ha ha). In FFG's case, however, I just view this as another mask. For all I know, she may very well be a bit of a Jew. What we know is she's a Feldman, which is not necessarily the same thing.

Had the "Jew money" conversation (i.e., FFG telling x that y comes from "old Jew money") (1) never taken place or (2) never been publicized, would she have "come out?" Would we have seen the Matzo ball mix box? Would she have dressed her Renaissance baby up as a high priest for the holidays?

Usually, it's a Jewish surname, going back ages because some Jews would work as jewelers or with precious metals. That's why you see Silverman/Goldman literally denoting that this person comes from a family that handled precious metals. During certain periods of history Jews were the only people allowed to lend money (and often it was the ONLY thing they were allowed to do in society, period), so it's a whole thing. Kohen/Cohen/Kohn is another one, meaning they're from a line of priests/rabbis. Different names mean different things, but not everyone sticks to the family line of things.

But that doesn't mean that person is Jewish automatically, they could have married in, or they may have come from someone that converted to Christianity and kept the name, or became an atheist or something, who knows. The naming convention, -man, doesn't always mean Jewish, either. That just means they're German or could have Prussian/Austro-Hungarian roots. There were just a lot of immigrants pre-war and refugees post-war who came here with that naming convention so we're most familiar with it. And that's just the Ashkenazi side, there are Sephardi, Mizrahi and many other branches of Judaism too.
