More than anything else, that map shows that we'll be in for mass starvation, as ash would be completely covering the prime farmland in the US.

Those two strategies are in opposition to each other though. The more you pump the message that Trump will win, the less margin you have to "fortify" without people not believing it.

I agree. However I don't think its very difficult for;
A. The Dems to simply shrug and push the narrative that polls aren't reliable
B. To have trump winning by a landslide up until about two-three weeks before election.
Most voters don't keep up with information constantly and even suppressing them for the next two and a half months reaps some gains, enough to make the margin for fortifying votes easier. Regardless I don't see a world where republicans in swing states being convinced sitting home being a good world for Trumps election.
