You aren't wrong. A lot of charities and organzitions, those specifically run by public officials and other celebs, have ulterior motives. Some of them aren't even necessarily evil, their work however serves purposes of networking and public relations.

To add on to Joe Paterno with another sports controversy, I highly recommend watching the 30 for 30 documentary on Lance Armstrong. A two partier, it went over his entire career ranging from his beginnings, his cancer battle, his victories, his charity work and his inevitable fall from grace for cheating. One of the things the documentary highlighted was how his foundations work into cancer research, while actually having a huge positive impact on it, was concocted from the beginning to be a weapon for Lance to use against people accusing him of doping.

They literally show news segments and interviews he was doing from twenty years ago during his victory streak where he would verbatim say things along the lines of "Look at all the work I am doing for struggling cancer patients. Do you really want to make an accusation that someone like me is a cheater?". Despite anyone with half a brain being able to see what he was blatantly doing by saying things like that, people refused to say anything out of misguided morality until enough evidence emerged that Lance was a fraud.

Mr. Beast's entire schtick since gaining popularity has been to publicize this big charity projects he is involved with as YouTube content. I would not be shocked if years ago when he was first gaining momentum he knew how delicate the balance between stability and ruin was for someone like him, so he decided to do all this work to develop as much of a positive profile as he could for his public image. That way when controversies eventually occurred like what he is experiencing now, he would have more goodwill on his side to navigate the negative impact he'll likely experience.
