They like to imagine that they're locked in some titanic struggle for cultural dominance with America, when almost everyone outside of France and everyone outside of Europe knows France hasn't been that culturally influential in a long, long time. Certainly Japan, and arguably quite a few other non-American countries are more culturally influential globally today than France is.
