I was surprised to see that less than 50 % reported that they had been sexually abused as children. IIRC the number was something like 25 %. The papers I was reading were mostly case studies. A lot of the psycho serial killers from the 80s had very crazy childhoods with cult themes (Charles Manson, Ottis Toole, Henry Lee Lucas) and a lot of child abusers were sexually abused as children (the abused/abuser cycle). Its a one way correlation, many sick people were abused (physically, psychologically, sexually) as children, but a lot of people who were abused as children turn out "fine". Its a small group who cannot handle the trauma and becomes monsters.

I know a lot of defense attorneys and it's made me very skeptical about claims regarding sexual abusers having been victims.
The reason you hear this is because lawyers literally have to tell their clients accused of abuse that their sentence may be reduced if they were themselves abused as children. They will even say "obviously you shouldn't lie but I know there's a lot of stigma, so maybe you haven't told anyone before, but if it happened, now's the time to talk about it."
The result of this is that a lot of people suddenly remember sexual abuse and become adamant that they just were perpetuating a cycle.
It definitely happens that way sometimes, but these are the least trustworthy SOBs on Earth, who are very good at making up stories to make you sympathetic.
