A big problem with getting the general public (i.e., parents) on board is that Discord is a mystery to many. When they hear "social media" they will think of YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter/X, probably Snapchat and insta, maaaaaybe Reddit. Discord is a vague concept and perceived, if at all, as something too complicated to be used by kids. Parents also probably have a hazy, mistaken idea that there are "guardrails" on the social media platforms they know about. When they hear about Discord, they'll just lump it in with all the others as "probably it's fine, I don't have the time/bandwidth to police my kid online", without realizing what a frighteningly different beast it is.

Adults may be able to grasp it and understand why the situation is "bad" if it's explained to them like this:

These are "chatrooms" (yes, I know they're called servers) created by adults for discussion of a YouTube channel that's squarely aimed at minor children. These adults, instead of moderating the conversation and ensuring it was safe and appropriate for kids, instead paraded their own degeneracy, encouraged sexual discussion, and posted pornography for children to see.

Many of the finer details that we recognize, such as the definition of a private server or the distinction between loli and actual CP, will only confuse them and/or creep them out enough to click away. "I don't want to read about this, it's depressing and sad, I have enough to do as a parent, it's probably fine, my kid isn't involved in whatever "Discord" is, they're going to fire this creep anyway, and I would know if my kid was being perved on or groomed."

What needs to happen is a somber segment on one of the morning shows, laying everything out as simply as I described above. Problem is, it's so icky, and anything that even brushes up against cp, or even kids and any kind of porn, the morning shows don't want to talk about that.

Someone like Dr. Phil would be a good fit to get the story to the masses. He's mainstream but has demonstrated a willingness to go to very dark places. He could invite 18-year-olds (and their parents) as guests to describe their experiences as minor children.

The entire transgender aspect, as central as it is, people aren't ready for that. And loli? Forget about it. You've got to hold their hands, spoon-feed them, tiptoe up to it. "A guy on a kid's TV show had a dirty chatroom for kids with porn in it" is about as much as most people will be willing to absorb. "Porn-addicted men who fetishize themselves as women are showing actual and cartoon porn to kids to gratify themselves and lead the kids down the same path" is not going to compute.

How we perceive the story here, the ugly, convoluted truth of it, is not going to translate to the general public. Parenting blogs/YouTubers/whatever moms consume won't touch it. And the YouTube reactor and drama channels covering the situation - parents will be confused by all the details they don't understand, if they see them at all.

It will need to be chewed up, spit out, and reconsumed over and over again to make it palatable. It will need to progress from Discord > us > YouTubers > right-wing media > possibly mainstream media > Dr. Phil, stripping the story of its nuance and its ugliest details (transgender adults, child porn) every step of the way.

As focused as we are among ourselves (and rightly so!) on CSAM and on Chris himself, these aren't the hooks that will let the story be pulled into the zeitgeist. What's happened needs to get out there, but I worry that the very reasons why it's so appallingly evil may lead, in the end, to it getting swept away.

I had some spare time this morning so I decided to try to learn some transformers.js. I have made a simple yet effective semantic search tool for the Discord leaks. It all runs locally in the browser which means it's easy to download your own copy and run it at home in case the CF overlords decide my transphobic project has too much wrongthink in it. Unfortunately because of the size of the full embeddings file, this doesn't let you search everyone's messages, only messages Chris sent. I'm gonna see if I can do some quantization and compression so that we can search everything, not just Chris' messages. I'll update if I can get it working

It's semantic searching so if you search for "child grooming" it won't just bring up messages which mention that exact phrase, but also messages with similar content e.g. "child gr00ming" or "rape" or "child abuse" etc. This makes it easier to find interesting stuff that might not match an exact keyword.

You can then click on a search result to see the context. Also, I split the giant ass HTML files into chunks, so your browser won't shit itself when you try to load the context. The first search you do will always be slow because it has to load the text embedding model but after that it should be faster.
