UK 'Major incident' after reports of stabbing and 'number of casualties' in Southport

Police have declared a "major incident" in Southport after reports of a stabbing and a "number of reported casualties".

Police said a knife had been seized and that a man had been detained but urged the public to avoid the area near Hart Street.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday 29 July.

"At around 11.50am, we were called to a property on Hart Street to reports of a stabbing.

"There are a number of reported casualties and more details will be confirmed when possible.

"Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station.

"Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public."

One child confirmed dead:
  • Person who was arrested is 17
  • Multiple victims were stabbed on Hart Street, Southport, at around 11:50 BST
  • A man has has been arrested and there is no wider threat to the public, police say
  • The North West Ambulance Service says paramedics treated at least eight victims with stab injuries

'A worker at the Bridge Café on the road told Metro: ‘I’ve been told that a man went into a Yoga studio and stabbed a number of really young children.
‘I’ve got no idea why anyone would do this, or why someone would do this.
‘I feel sick, there was a class on apparently and he just walked in with a knife.
‘You hear about these things happening in America but you just never ever think that something like this would happen in this country.’

He says the incident happened at the Hope of Hart children's club, which is down a back street in a former warehouse building.
He says the victims were children, and describes one girl on a stretcher covered in blood.
"Her parents were running after her. It was horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it.
"There were so many police cars. It was a mass of blue lights.
"I saw ambulance men and women in tears. People were in tears in the streets."

Not a massively diverse area, still possible but more likely some chav who was having relationship problems or something since Southport is basically one big council estate at this point.

I'm from nearby, although haven't lived in the region for well over a decade. Having spoken to friends in recent years, it seems like the demographic has been shifting for a few years now. Think a lot of the hotels along the prom were used to house asylum seekers.
