I still find it puzzling that she was with Malan for EIGHT YEARS <but had so few stories about them as a couple>
I'm convinced Malan was a lot more passive about being a "couple" than Chantal would have us believe.
1. Of the five main reasons Malan lived with Chantal, the fact that she was still physically capable of sex was reasons 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
2. He knew Chantal presented herself as his girlfriend, and he didn't exactly deny it, but he was a lot more "meh, whatever" .
3. She pushed her way into living with him and he was still "meh, whatever" before he realized how useless she would be to live with.
4. She doesn't have any real stories of them as a couple because they were a couple in only the broadest sense of the word.
5. Realizing the mistake he had made, he started looking for reasons to get rid of her almost as soon as she moved in.
6. Cheating, being unemployed, not pulling her weight (haha), being a slob were all the excuses he needed to yeet her the fuck out.
7. That tearful "we broke up, it was a mutual decision" was less "lost love" and more "yeah, about that--you're gonna have to move".
It was mostly the look on his face when she tried to be physically affectionate, or engage him in just about anything. It's been commented upon many times, how he might be a nice guy but he was right on the verge of saying ""Look, I'm just trying to make some mafe, could you please get out of my face?" I don't think anyone doubts that the pizza boxes in the closet was the last straw.
Finally, that last visit to the apartment was so pathetically cringey. She tried so hard to project an air of being perfectly comfortable and at-home because it was Malan's place and she would always be his special someone blah blah blah blah. He just sat there eating his dinner and watching TV--or playing a game? I forget which. Waiting, waiting, patiently waiting, until she was gone. After that, my guess is you'll never hear from him again.
