DC Comics Multimedia General - A crisis of infinite fuck ups

Creature Commandos looks meh, could be good, or could be bad.

But I seriously want to know which guy in DC has been pushing for Suicide Squad stuff in the past 10 years, it feels like there is more content about the Squad than the Big Three Heroes in terms of adaptations and the like between 2014-now
I guess they think SS appeals more to the teens who like the edge and danger of a bunch of heroic criminals. And much like the Justice League, it can essentially be any character lineup they happen to feel like at the time I guess

It feels like its less of that and more because of Guardians of the Galaxy being a thing and DC wanting to compete with that. The 2016 movie is proof of that given that's like Ground Zero for when the Suicide Squad shilling went into hyperdrive.

I think the only genuine care that anyone has put into Suicide Squad is maybe James Gunn, only because he genuinely likes playing around with obscure comic book characters and his Suicide Squad film is more accurate to how the squad should be used than how most SS projects treat them as the government's anti-Justice League group.

Oh I do like THE Suicide Squad (2021)

What the actual fuck.

Did they make the Penguin a troon? Well at least it's the most accurate tranny representation I've ever seen considering they made him ugly as sin.

Spoke about it before in the SS game thread, but the whole deal with SS is strange. They were announced to have video games and animated adaptations 4 years prior to Guardians of the Galaxy. Their first project, Assualt on Arkham, even came out the same year as Guardians. Before that, WB announced an SS game game happening in like 2010, before Arkham City was even released.

While the 2016 movie cut to be like Guardians, it was not initially filmed as such. It was made to be a darker film like Assault till Warner got cold feet after BvS’s reception.

I would argue that SS is nothing more than WB trying to create a Harley Quinn brand, maybe exploit DC’s wealth of great villains second. It would line up too, as Harley’s resurgence in popular media began with Arkham Asylum, of which SS was then being announced/developed as a game afterwards. SS material also always places Harley front-and-center. Deadshot and Boomerang may as well be Harley’s accessories.

Harley is also just a general focus for WB. They gave her and Joker all the merch for the original SS, she got her own film with Birds of Prey and even a TV series.

Bruce Timm's posting on Toonzone. He denies having a shipping preference and claims it's everyone else's fault but his.
How can he say this while having a literal sex scene of Batman and Bat Girl in Killing Joke

If he's doing this dogshit ship, Bat Girl should at least be old enough for Bruce than the weird pedo shit he did

this is hilarious. I think it's funny he feels the need to address this at all. If I was him I would have just totally ignored anyone asking about it, especially if that isn't happening here. maybe just say not this time and leave it at that. he seems like he sort of has a sense of humor about it, or at least just knows there is nothing he can do about people hitting him with that. I wouldn't have bothered denying shit just say we aren't doing it again and leave it there.

it is specifically this. the whole SS astroturfing started in 2011 when they threw Harley on TFX in the New 52 Suicide Squad book. that's why we got a game announcement and animated and live action movies of it when we did. they had kind of been flailing with Harley and SS for years and when they redesigned her to look more like the arkham version and then rebranded her as girl deadpool complete with her joining the suicide squad as her version of Uncanny X-Force, it actually moved those books and a lot of people (for whatever reason) really liked it. I think a lot of it has to do with the initial excitement of N52 being something new or whatever every book got astroturfed by normies thinking they could jump in to comics finally, and people who were just optimistic of where it was going. Normies have always loved Harley Quinn so they latched onto the new version. hell, I actually liked the redesign myself because I thought it was cool they made her hotter (though now I wish she'd go back to the jester outfit and stay there, although the look has never been a problem for me it's the damage they did to her as a character) the rest has just been the natural progression of that soaring popularity, even if I don't particularly think it was warranted.

There is a new Gotham City Sirens comic coming out soon, I hope it's good. It's written by some ginger chick with huge tits. Leah Williams. Have no idea about her. The preview covers I've seen have lots of cheesecake. The old series was very good when Paul Dini wrote it. The rest was ok too. Harley's first solo series (also started by Dini) was good as well. I remember the part when she died and went to hell being a particular highlight. That series got kind of lousy before it ended though with whoever took over the writing.

I saw the new animated series trailer, I'm hyped.

Still iffy on penguin from what I've heard, but every other villain seems to be amazing.

They brought back onomatopoeia, and a new take on harley.

I'm genuinely hyped for something for once

Is there a Caped Crusader thread? I've been watching it today. I have some criticisms, the least of which is that anybody behind the scenes who says this is not just a BTAS reboot with fat lesbos is a filthy liar.

I watched the first five episodes of the Caped Crusader today. So far it's mostly decent. Some of the DEI stuff is funny -- apparently this world has solved racism but not sexism (there's a couple of remarks about Gordon saving Renee from being the office coffee girl... even though there are other female police officers that nobody seems to have a problem with). Every crowd is basically a gradient of white to dark brown.

Some of the character changes are weird and too over the top. Harley Quinn has little to do with any of her popular characterizations and is more of a mash up of Hugo Strange and Lock-Up. I did like her costume, at least. Likewise, Penguin is now a woman, a mother, a singer, and apparently at least somewhat attractive (Bullock seems to flirt with her). Why not just make original characters at that point?

Still, the villains they don't makeover are well done. I thought Catwoman was great (outside of randomly having a tamed jaguar out of nowhere), same with Clayface and Firefly. The scripts are well done and none of the episodes were actually bad or even boring. I do feel like they should've leaned more heavily into serialization. Right now this largely just feels like a more subdued, less fun version of the old Batman: the Animated Series with a worse voice cast and more generic animation. Or at the very least leaned more heavily into the noir aspects given that they have Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka writing for the show.

Saw Caped Crusader, it’s perfectly decent for what it is.

Personally I do feel they should’ve had more continuity since the show weirdly tries to be both episodic and serialized at the same time.

I do like a lot of the villain designs notably for Clayface, Two Face, and Harley.

Do like the mob is the biggest threat in the show rather than the Joker for now.

I'm a few episodes into Caped Crusader.

It's pretty mid but not terrible. Better than the CGI abomination from 10 years ago by a mile.

It does make the same mistake Beware the Batman did and focuses on the lesser known villians. Just like Beware, this could backfire terrible if they don't start introducing some if the heavy hitters from time to time. Batman is known for his top tier rogues gallery.

Race swapping the Gordon's feels a little weird, but it still works. Female Penguin supringsly works. Serious Harley is interesting at first, but really doesn't work.

On episode 8:

"Look, this episode has all the Robins come from the same orphanage. Even Carrie!"

"So, you're gonna do something with them, right?"

"...Look, it's all the Robins! Except Tim. Fuck Tim."

Also, on one hand, I like that we're not keeping Harvey a total scumbag. On the other hand, this doesn't really feel like the same crooked asshole we saw in the first half of the season. It feels like they suddenly realized that Harvey becoming Two-Face wouldn't have any punch if we hate him off the bat.
