Being an American who also has Brits in the family I feel uniquely suited to respond.

In America, your class is based entirely on utilitarian and egalitarian virtue. What you and your family provide to the community and in return what you obtain in financial compensation. Community recognition + money= class, in the USA. Which is why a very successful HVAC repairman/company owner would be considered "high class" in the USA. Especially if he uses his money to sponsor the high school football team and pays to have his company plastered on the billboard over the interstate exit leading to town.

In the UK, class is something you are born with. It is so innate in fact, that your social level can be instantly determined based solely on your accent. While the USA has mild regional accents, the UK has wildly different accents based on county and those accents further differentiate based on class. The ruling class is the only pan county spoken accent in England, and is the "English Accent" you hear in film and plays in America.

This means a successful and wealthy HVAC repairman/company owner, first generation would be considered lower middle class (tradesman). A step above the pissants who work for him (working class). If he's successful, he might be able to put his son through University in a prestige school and allow him to earn a position as a middle manager banker, or lawyer. Upper middle class.
