While we're off into laptop land, has anyone here actually had their hands on a Framework machine? I like the principles behind it, even if Linus is a financer/supporter of them, but I just worry in actuality, it'll be jank.

This is a 1st Gen that I have owned for around a year. I run Linux and use this machine full time for software development.

You definitely pay a premium for the repairability. It’s got some jank, but it’s lovable jank. Until buying this I was using a T410. The Framework gives the same vibe without looking like a turbo-autist in public. Repairs on it have been absolutely painless.

The build quality is decent. More on par with a ThinkPad. Screen is little flimsy but the aspect ratio and resolution are nice. I usually get 5-6 hours of battery life on a charge. The keyboard is fantastic, but the touchpad is not amazing. The modules are not anything special, but come in handy every once in a while.

Hope this helps.

My monitor appears to be the same but an older model, S2721DGF. Here's my thoughts:
  • The monitor stand appears to be the same one they use for the UltraSharp monitors, just with a bit of gamer plastic on it. I haven't tried swapping in one of my UltraSharp stands but the mechanism looks and feels identical. This is a good thing, the UltraSharp monitors have good ergonomics that operate smoothly and shit all over most gamer monitors.
  • Some dickhead implemented "Display Port Deep Sleep" which puts the monitor into such a deep standby with no detected input that it is no longer considered plugged in. This caused me bizarre stability issues on Linux and Windows 10 (11 is fine) will move all windows to the primary display. There is no way to turn this off, only workaround I have is setting a blank screensaver so the monitor is never truly off. Absolutely retarded.
  • Display itself is clear and sharp, the anti glare is not overdone and I've had these for nearly a year, literally running 24x7 (thanks DP Deep Sleep) and no issues or weirdness to speak of.
I bought a similar LG Ultragear 27GP850-B prior to the Dells and ended up selling it to my brother after getting one of these Dells as a sample (ordered 2 more afterwards, all on sale price). The LG monitor has a flimsy as fuck stand, external power brick and the same DP Deep Sleep bullshit going on. The Dell monitor on sale basically shits all over LG's retarded bullshit.
Well I am happy to hear this. Always have liked Dell monitors, durable as fuck, never have had one die on me *knock on wood*. The fact this is apparently a improved version if I'm reading you correctly only makes me more confident in wanting it. Thank you.

Were you using X? This is one of those few things that work better on Wayland. It’s still not 100% but at least with LG monitors it works.

I have no idea if it's improved, it's basically a refreshed version as mine is 1 year old. So in theory it should be better, but y'know...

Wayland on an AMD GPU. Plasma was shitting itself to death randomly when the monitors woke and I never truly figured out what was going on until I returned to Windows and saw all my windows get shuffled around like crazy.

It usually worked and its behavior when it did work was better than Windows, but the times when it didn't were super frustrating since it collapses like a house of cards, everything I had open now unceremoniously killed as the parent process has died.

They may have fixed it now (this was back in 2023), and even if they haven't, a screensaver workaround would also work, but I need to sort out my work from home setup before switching back to Linux. I was using Linux on my laptop while traveling recently and it was really nice, so much faster than Windows even while running on slightly inferior hardware. The customizability of the Linux ecosystem cannot be beat and Windows is devolving at an alarming rate in that area.

I'll keep that in mind. I am biased admittedly, I like Dell monitors, and I want it to match my other two Dells, that and they just don't break in my experience. We will see how this one turns out. If it's like my other Dells, it'll have a long life.

There is some irony in a power saving feature being so inconvenient that the user would rather go back to just blasting the thing at full power 24/7 instead. But that’s EU regulations for you, lawmakers look at something that’s already using barely any power and write a law mandating it use only a tenth of that, so the only recourse is to either leave the market or to cut basic functionality like wake on signal. They did the same to dishwashers, by mandating less water use. The effect was that the user has to run the machine two or three times to get clean dishes instead, using considerably more water in the process.

I do not understand the animosity here, I haven't attacked anything you wrote. It looks like the launch is on for this month, so I'm likely to be proven incorrect anyways.
You're right, my apologies. I got irritated because to me it appeared you were just disregarding most of what I wrote and I was just having to say the same thing over again. My country is on fire and I am stressed. No offence meant.

AMD, btw, have just released two new Ryzen 5000 series chips - The 5900XT and the 5800XT. Maximising their profits. They're not stopping selling the current gen entirely, it will be a transitory period as it always is. But should see 9000 series next week, I think. Pricing leaks suggest what imo is a fairly normal pricing. A bit cheaper than the current gen was at launch but not by much. Probably going to be less of a drastic price drop afterwards as a consequence.

Annoying for me is that the X870 gen motherboards probably wont be till September so if I want to build a system with all new shiny I have to wait 2-3 extra months. Of course there's no really big reason why I should - it's a minimal change over the current gen chipsets. But I just kind of feel if I'm doing a new build it should all be current gen parts.

Holy shit I've had this problem since I got my 6750XT (switching from using DVI to DP) a few months ago. Assumed it was something to do with display port, but never anything concrete. Thank you for this.

With GPUs devouring most of TSMC's leading-edge production, it makes all the sense in the world to find ways to sell 7nm chips.

I've just learned about the whole intel fiasco, I got a i7 14700k earlier this year, how fucked am I ?
If you aren't getting BSOD's already you're ok. In a few weeks intel will have a microcode update that will supposedly stop the chips from killing themselves (TBD if it actually works). Once you start getting instability issues though it means your chip is perma fucked.

i9s are like 25-50% screwed supposedly and from the crash report stats earlier in the thread the i7s are like a tiny fraction of that so probably like ~95% chance you are ok just dont roll a 1

so far so good I guess. I didn't get any weird BSOD with my system. What makes it extra painful is I had to change my mobo just for that cpu
