Science “Extremely Rare” Kitten Born With Four Ears Steals Hearts At Tennessee Rescue

Article (Archive)

When a kind-hearted soul rescued a litter of kitties trapped in a duct taped box, they never imagined one of these animals would turn out to be such an unusual find. Among the four adorable kittens inside the container, one of them had an extra pair of ears! True Rescue in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, has been telling the story of how they acquired the unique animal. According to staff, this mutation is “extremely rare.”

In a video on Facebook, True Rescue shared some footage of the rescued kitten with four ears. They explained that the poor cat and his siblings had been sealed inside a box “with no air holes” to suffocate! Thankfully, someone discovered the abandoned kitties and transported them to the shelter. That’s when staff realized that one of the four animals wasn’t quite like the others.

True Rescue included a close-up of the kitten’s four ears in the Facebook post. Apparently, the feline has a pair of normal-looking ears with two extras inside. These secondary ears are very small and face the opposite direction.

In another post, the shelter revealed that they’d come up with the perfect name for the kitten with four ears: Audio! They also shared that, thankfully, this unusual genetic mutation shouldn’t cause any health problems. Although this feline isn’t the only one of his kind, he’s still quite an outlier!

“The last kitten we were able to find research about that had 4 ears came from Turkey and was from 2 years ago,” True Rescue wrote. “We will have him fully checked by a vet, but from what we know, the inner ear is completely normal and will cause no issues, other than having extra flaps to clean!”

According to NewsNation, Audio couldn’t have come to the shelter at a better time. True Rescue has been struggling due to flooding issues. Having a rare, four-eared kitten has brought way more attention to the animal rescue online!

Sadly, Audio isn’t quite ready to be adopted. He still needs further medical evaluation before that can happen. There are no plans to remove his extra ears, since they’re not hurting him at the moment. We hope this little guy ends up with a loving family that appreciates his unique feature!

Do cats with four ears have more sensitive hearing? Because if so, this might effect how it tries to audibly communicate. I know that deaf cats have a tendency to be extremely loud when meowing.
I assumed it's the external ear flaps doubled but not the ear canal and the ear drum?

This is the most likely answer, otherwise it'd have facial/occular deformities from trying to shove too much stuff into that little kitty skull. The ear canal might be a bit grown over so it might have a harder time hearing, particularly with locating the sounds, but there's a good chance the little alien will be fine otherwise. The fact they say they're pretty sure it won't cause any major health issues reinforces that.

Has this urban legend ever been proven? I've always been curious.
What exactly are you asking? Do some people in Asia eat cats and dogs? Yeah undoubtably, like for dogs look into some of the horrible battery farming operations for dogs they've bust in South Korea.

If you mean unsuspecting meat swapping well that's quite something else. From what I understand if you buy cat or dog meat, it's not much cheaper if at all versus something like chicken or beef. Obviously street cats are free, but that's not exactly the most consistent source of stock, even in areas with prowling packs of strays. They might not show up every day and if they do, they might beat you in a fight or run away, so I don't think it happens enough masse like is perpetrated in the media as a bit of a joke. HAS it happened though? Oh yes, certainly.

I live in the West and one of the local Chinese restaurants in my area got shut down for stealing ducks from the small local park lol.

He's making me think a little bit of a real life Ryo-Ohki now, even if he has two ears instead of a massive fluff inside his ear that kinda looks like it's own ear (and somehow Ryo-Ohki is a rabbit) but it's making me want him even more...
