You’re right that the effects of millions of people starving/dying of thirst in cities and suburbs would reduce the population though. It’s a miracle things work now. They aren’t fixing anything in that scenario, and there won’t be fuel for their generators after a few weeks. US refining and shipping ports are hanging on by a thread right now as is.

The oil industry considers refining and so on 'downstream', as in basically overhead that they don't want to deal with really. Upstream, the drilling and exploration is where the profits are. All the rest is a loss leader, that's why when Exxon ate up Mobil they wrecked tons of the Mobil stuff which was a lot of downstream. BP is completely the same.

The min things that need to be done, backup refineries ( Expensive, bad for eco warriors, low profit, and take up land) and replacement transformers and so on for local power plants. Without those we're really in a terrible weak situation that only a few hundred/thousand well equipped people with bombs, small EMPs, and guns could mean bye bye electricity all over for years or ever.

ETA some typos, but really it's a fine line from now to disaster. After 9/11 I and friends of mine said 'infrastructure, water and power are next'. Somehow it hasn't happened, but it would be a real big problem.

I'm almost wondering if they don't do it because MAD situation might apply. Practically it's not hard. Like Cruz said, he doesn't know how we haven't been hit by at least mass school shootings like Beslan or worse.

Yes, there's also the plastics market, pretty much every sealed plastic chip bag's silver in-lining is produced from ExxonMobil downstream to Frito-Lay.

But overall, it's where they never want to invest in since there's so much damn oil for the next generations that's fairly easy to get, especially with fracking, that it's a like how TI considers calculators. A bit of a publicity stunt that's a tiny part of the business. Or why Apple keeps making Mac computers now, it's just goodwill stuff mostly. They really don't have to improve TI calcs any, they're locked in. Apple has a beholden Mac audience that's small too, no need to innovate much anymore.

Sorry to take this into a business discussion now, but Disney and game companies really lose the basic business idea of 'goodwill'. That is a very valuable idea in the real world.
