I read the quote and he's ragging on miserable childless cat ladies, who are definitely a thing. There are also a lot of happy childless cat ladies out there. And childless dog ladies, and childless cat men, etc.

I guess I'm just tired of generalization. To be clear (ugh I hate that phrase but it works), this next comment is not specifically directed at you: If you're a woman who is happy being single, childless, and owns a cat or seven, then why get upset at Vance's comment? He's not talking about you. And for anyone who is so miserable they make people around them miserable too...get some help. You don't have to be.

I know things are more expensive now (thanks Biden), but the underlying mechanics of raising kids hasn't changed; only a segment of the population's willingness to do it.

To be fair, a lot of people want to provide a better life than they had for their kids, and knowing they likely won't be able to do that because of the cost can be a bitter pill to swallow, especially if they're already financially struggling. It also seems to be the case that when you're struggling to be responsible for yourself (pay your bills, rent, etc) it can depress your willingness/readiness to be responsible for someone else like a child in today's environment where it's not expected you're automatically going to have kids.

The highest cost isn't food, it's childcare. Not many coupons for that. Easier if you can be around older family members who can help at no cost, but many people don't even have that at all.

Luckily, while me and my spouse aren't high earners both of our jobs allow for not having to pay for childcare and keeping our kids with us instead, and we are both budget minded and willing to figure it out and opt for cloth diapers and other cost saving measures like that. But if a tax credit came out for 5k per kid? I'd definitely feel relieved and use that money on our kids.

Edit: A figure I've seen a few times is that it costs 10k per year per kid on average, for reference. A huge chunk of that is childcare. And there are ways to get that number down for sure (reaching out to relatives for hand me downs, making baby food instead of buying it, sticking to whole foods instead of processed crap that isn't filling, etc) but I've seen a lot of people see that number and just say they don't have the money. It's very sad and concerning.
