This was my experience, too. I was 18 by the time I got older men hitting on me and cat calls, and at that point I was kinda glad because it meant I wasn't horrifically homely or something. These incidents were annoying and jarring at best, frightening and made me feel unsafe at worst, and always just a crime of opportunity - the men don’t do it because you’re hot (or not) they do it because you’re there. The catcalling stopped when I went back to driving myself as my primary mode of transport, because it’s really difficult to get the attention of a woman driving in a car with the windows rolled up by yelling at her from the street. The main correlative factor wasn’t what I was wearing, it was just how accessible I was.

It’s super difficult for me to believe that anybody enjoys being wolf whistled at, unless they’re a troon and that desperate for outside validation of their gender.

The whole point is that you are what you are. Do you prefer sewing to football even though you're a man? You're still a man. Regarding the bearded dragon that died shortly before she did, I was going to say that taking care of her pet lizard was probably the one good, solid dependable thing Makayla ever did in her life. Bearded dragons, despite being marketed as "beginner's reptiles" are anything but; they need a large enclosure, UVB and a basking spot, and they have complex dietary needs (needing fresh greens AND live insects daily). I know I wouldn't be able to meet a bearded dragon's needs, so I'm sticking to easier pet reptiles despite 20 years of experience.

Then I began to wonder... did Makayla actually care for her pet lizard, or was that job delegated to mom or grandma as well? She spent roughly half the time of the past three years in inpatient care, and someone must have cared for the lizard when she was unable to, buying live crickets and mealworms, replacing the UVB and heat spot bulbs, cleaning the cage from droppings... Upkeep Makayla would have been unable to do from a hospital bed.
