Something on a platform outside of your own domain. Gmail, Outlook, etc. Any of those will do. The reason for this is because if you change your registrant info for your domain to an email on that domain and then something happens... now you're completely locked out because your email is being routed through the currently fucked up domain.
Wouldn't the attacker have lost access to the email once he redirected the DNS to KF though? I don't think he ever managed to redirect it to his own server.
Not exactly. Where a domain resolves to is handled by its A and CNAME records. A records use IP addresses (such as a server) and CNAME use direct URL's. The hacker likely used a CNAME record to redirect to the Farms.
