Well, tumblr was full of people who went to places like DigiPen, CalArts, University of Montreal and similar programs who then went into the industry and/or became creators and showrunners (cf. Noelle Stevenson and Rebecca Sugar on the art side) and who in turn heavily influence youngsters who also went to these institutions. It was both a networking tool and a an aesthetic cult.
Of course places like reddit and 4chan had such people too but weren't as cultish and 4chan in particular has had a shit reputation even before Trump and Gamergate, pretty much everybody associated with it has to practice soft disavowal of the incel nazi mass shooter pro-drump website even if tumblr was a absolute hive of scum and villany full of CP and grooming and similar shit for close to a decade.

Likewise lots of the SOCJUS shit was pushed by users who were Ivy League/small LibArts college students who did stuff like lit crit and sociology and could bamboozle people with Foucaultian word salad.

I didn't even know this was a thing until I saw the name "Ragnar Tørnquist" in relation to it and felt like I remembered the name from somewhere.
I'm joining the handful of people utterly floored that this is from The Longest Journey guy. Like... huh? What the fuck happened? I guess it has been two and a half decades.

I never wound up finishing Dreamfall: Chapters, but even in there - the reveal that Kian is gay actually came off as entertaining. They don't stress it at all, and let you think you've got various romance-path options. There's a femme fatale that you have the option to be seduced by - and naturally, the twist would be that all of that was misdirection. My main issue with Dreamfall and Chapters alike is that the idea of a fantasy & sci-fi setting crammed in one is that you need a solitary character to hop between them, and splitting the stories up to follow two separate characters really just... makes it feel like two shallow stories next to each other. I dropped it because it was boring and uninteresting.

Then again, I do remember there being something in the sci-fi setting with Zoe that seemed outrageously stupid and melodramatic, even in the first or second episode. It's been such a long time since I played it, I don't even remember - but maybe that was a tell for what was to come.

I do love that the fat character does a tiny hop to ground-pound with her girth, though. That's pretty great.
It's like - this is what a not-skeletonized Mel Brooks would make if he wanted to parody perceptions of progressives. Except the developers... thought this was cool?

I have a theory about this. I've seen changes like this happen with other indie devs that I like, though not nearly as extreme as what happened to Ragnar. Back when Dreamfall: Chapters was in development, I visited the Red Thread forums to see when the fucking thing would finally be finished and the forums were infested with the types of people you'd normally find on RetardEra and RPG Codex.

My theory is that indie devs can get easily trapped in a wokie hugbox via forums or Discord servers, which makes them think that these people are the primary audience.

For instance, another dev I liked made three solid games with fun gameplay and universal appeal. Then he made a fourth game to reach a "new audience" (uh oh) and instead of a funny cartoonish game with challenging mechanics, we get an uggo tumblr lesbian and a shitty rhythm game that doesn't even match with what you're doing. All the streamers/YouTubers who regularly played these games hated it and I didn't even bother getting it. The dev seems like a very nice guy but it seems like he's listening to a totally different group of people now.
