This feels more like an staffing problem they haven't been public about. We already knew the military has failed to meet its recruiting goals since 2021 and the purges. I can absolutely believe the federal agency whose specific job is taking bullets for someone has the same recruiting and retention problems. They just wouldn't make announcements about it.

I bet if Congress digs hard enough, somewhere there's a policy doc that says DHS employees can stand in for non-body shield roles (personal detail? whatever they're called). There's probably a low staffing threshold that triggers it. If all they need is a sniper or a perimeter walker, why bother getting the best? Any old fed with gun training will do.

I vividly remember when the creation of DHS was announced after 9/11. Every dead-ender from every Fed agency whose superiors wanted gone made a mad dash for jobs at DHS. That entire agency was filled with incompetence, the Fed equivalent of mall cops staking out their territory like it was the 1850's Gold Rush. It was obvious on Day 1 what it was going to turn into.
