I've graphed it and the growth has definitely scaled with Roblox's growth in general. It'd take more thorough data collection to get a definitive answer as to whether it's accelerating faster than Roblox's growth or not.

Roblox stopped being good around the mid - late 2010s in my opinion but it seems Roblox has gotten exponentially worse when Covid hit and it now felt like a completely different game.

The economic impact of lockdowns, the further centralization around Silicon Valley giants, the enshittification of every single product on the market and so on.

Roblox starting in the early 2010s (2010/2011, I think?) was beginning to become a hotbed for this shit.

I vaguely remember in the very beginning, there were mainstream regular roleplay games on like the front page and shit that had their own chat system. It was like a wild west, and the filter the developers put in were incredibly easy to bypass and soon people started ERPing in them. Roblox started to clamp down on custom chat systems sometime in the mid 2010s by mandating that any custom chat GUIs use their filter or else the creators could be at risk of getting banned with their games moderated. While a decent effort to clean up the chat, that did nothing to solve the ERP problem.

Even as late as 2014/2015 I remember encountering people online who wanted to ERP with me. They used both the on-site instant messaging system and the in-game chat system. They didn't get far, but I wasn't even playing anything NSFW to reach these people, I was literally in traditional roleplay games when I encountered these fucks. The fact that this has gone unchecked for more than a decade at this point is embarrassing and downright negligent for a big company like Roblox.

Fucking hell, that character and name gave me traumatic flashbacks. It was often used in "gross places", a phenomenon documented by parts of the amateur Roblox YouTube community in the early 2010s in which people showcased NSFW places and encouraged people to report them. I feel like at some point the community behind those fucking places started using this to market/advertise their fucking degeneracy.

My safety advocacy group, Moderation For Dummies, conducted an experiment that found out of 100 obvious ERP accounts reported to Roblox, ZERO were removed as a result of our reports.

I remember watching your video on this some time ago. I know you care about the game and the safety of its userbase and want to see it survive for the better, but I hope Roblox implodes and burns to the ground for the sake of that safety. It's astounding (in a good way) that you can keep getting up and fighting the good fight despite the owners of the platform blowing you off time and time again. If it's not now in your time through your work lately, then I at least hope you're the trailblazer whose work others can use to dismantle this thing atom by atom.

Yeah I think you are. While a lot of this popularity definitely came from 2020 where kids had nothing to do, I think Roblox started gaining more players with the rise of mobile devices. Roblox released on iOS in 2012, which I think was the start of more children playing it. Most mobile devices people used at the time could run the game fine, and kids could download the game straight onto their iPads and play stuff. More children playing, means more pedophiles.

Then COVID hit and the site got even worse.
